Elizabeth and Alejandro
How We Met
Alex and I are from the same town and we have gone to the same schools for years but it was not until high school where we started talking and we became really good friends. Once we became friends we spent hours talking on the phone about everything you could imagine. For sometime we lost touch with each other and one day while on Facebook I see a friend request from an old friend. I accepted of course and one instant message later and there we were like no time had passed picking up right where we left off. Alex and I began officially dating right out of high school in the summer of 2009 and have been inseparable ever since. There hasn’t been a moment where we were not together. Little did I know my real fairytale began in the halls of my high school as I laughed and joked with the man I was going to marry.
How He Asked
A few months ago my grandfather got sick and his chances weren’t great. I was devastated; Alex had never met either of them. Distance was definitely an issue since they lived in the Dominican Republic and work and life kind of just got in the way and we never got around to going. Our 7th year anniversary was around the corner and Alex had been planning something really special and the last thing I wanted to do was ruin his plans. Little did I know how surprised I was about to be!
A few days before our anniversary we were set to go on the surprise vacation that Alex had been planning for us. Everything was very secretive and planned out to the very last detail. Alex had told me what to bring, and how to pack for our trip so nothing was left to chance! After we had finished getting ready I turn around and Alex is standing by the door with a blindfold, I honestly thought he was kidding when he told me he was doing this a week ago but there he was blindfolding me before I could even say anything! As we walked to the car all I could think about was where we were going.
I had been given very little hints, because I’m impatient and needed something to get me through until the day arrived! Of course I still had no idea what we were doing or where we were going! Alex’s brother in law was so sweet to drive us and also kept Alex’s secret the whole way there. When we finally arrived I was able to take off my blindfold and we were at an airport! I was so excited I was one step closer to finding out where we were going!
It was only minutes after checking in that Alex handed one of the attendants our boarding passes and he said “Santiago, Dominican Republic that way ” as he pointed down a hallway. I completely froze for a second and said Santiago which Santiago!?! That’s when he tells me we were going to visit my grandparents!!!
I was completely shocked and speechless, the whole flight there I was an emotional wreck. I remember saying I can’t believe this is happening! Ever since I told him my grandfather had been sick and was worried they were never going to meet he knew this was the perfect way to spend our anniversary. I had imagined that seeing my grandparents was the most wonderful thing that would happen this weekend, but I was wrong.
The very next day we were making our way to my grandparent’s house and I noticed Alex was acting a bit strange and nervous but I figured it was because he was about to meet my grandparents for the first time. They were completely surprised and thrilled to see Alex and me, as I knew they would be. It was so surreal to have them meet Alex and show him the place that I first called home. It was such an amazing moment I never wanted it to end. After a short while Alex asks everyone to come outside because he wanted to say a couple of things. Before I even knew what was happening Alex was speaking Spanish (perfectly I might add for a guy who doesn’t speak it fluently!)
He started off by telling them how much he loved me. He said, he knew how important they were to me and that if it was important to me than it was important to him as well. Lastly he said he had one last thing to ask them, how they felt about me marrying him. My grandparents of course expressed their happiness of welcoming Alex into our family. Things still weren’t clicking for me it was only when I saw Alex get down on one knee that I knew what was happening! He was holding the most beautiful ring I’d ever seen and I was completely speechless.
I always imagined what I would do or say but at that moment all I could remember is looking down at him and thinking how ready I was to be his wife.
I looked at Alex as he said the words, “Elizabeth, will you marry me?” so many emotions washed over me all at once I remember screaming out Yes! Yes! and immediately embraced him with tears building up in my eyes. It was such an emotional moment and absolutely the last thing I ever thought would happen when I woke up that morning. Everything from our surprise trip was perfect from the first class plane ride right down to the horse drawn carriage! That moment was so much more than I could ever have imagined, surrounded by people I love saying yes to my prince charming. When Alex put this beautiful ring on my finger and hugged me tight I looked around and saw how much love and happiness we were surrounded with and I knew I couldn’t wait to marry my best friend.
I’m so excited to spend the rest of my life with someone who makes me feel like I’m living my very own fairytale.
