Derek and Kayte's Lake Michigan Proposal
How We Met: Derek and I met at Public House in Chicago on the evening of January 14, 2012. I went with my group of girls and Derek with his group of guys. Derek and a few of his friends came over by my friends and started making conversation with us. I thought Derek was very cute and before I knew it we were talking. We soon realized that we grew up in the same area. We hit if off from the start and exchanged numbers. We continued talking and seeing each other over the next few months. The more we talked, the more we realized how much we had in common. We fell in love with each other quickly. We both just knew it was right.
How He Asked – from the photographer’s persepective: Derek approached me, because I do wedding work, and he knew me from high school. She did not know me and he wanted to surprise her so it worked out for the surprise to just have me looking like I was taking pictures of Lake Michigan and not filming them. He had a mutual jeweler friend of ours make the ring and set up the blanket and champagne and rose petals and he took her out to where they met first then they biked all the way to Belmont Harbor in Chicago on Lake Michigan (which he scouted out 2 weeks before, with her).
Derek told me during the video that he always told her maybe in 5 years or so they would get engaged to throw her off the scent, but she then told her family about it while Derek was away on business so Derek said he had to go explain to her dad he wasn’t going to make her wait for 5 years. He used that opportunity to ask her father’s permission.
