How We Met

Omer and I met thru Facebook. As scared as I was to even begin to THINK about starting a relationship with someone online, I didn’t think too much into this guy because I didn’t think he was going to be someone I was going to continue talking to, let alone be my future husband… When he *poked* me (when that used to be a “thing” on FB), I wanted to ignore it as I was going thru a change in relationship status at the time anyway and was NOT in the mood to entertain anyone. However, I decided to write back to him because I noticed we had a good amount of mutual friends- which means he can’t be a total random stranger, right?! I will never forget what I first wrote to him, “Who pokes nowadays?”. Our convo went on and on for a couple of days and it was great, but I then shut off my FB without warning him, so he had no idea what the heck happened! I didn’t really care (as mean as that may sound) because we weren’t even friends. A couple of weeks passed by and during this time I had moved from Long Island, NY to Boca Raton, FL (big change, seriously). During this time, I was starting a new career, going to a new school, getting used to a new atmosphere, etc. Out of nowhere one random day, I get a twitter notification from *drumroll*… Omer! I have no idea how he found me (don’t really care at this point!), but I was taken by surprise for sure. We at that point exchanged numbers and started talking thru WhatsApp and really getting to know one another’s backgrounds. He was born and raised in NYC, but has been living in Istanbul, Turkey (which is like a couple thousand miles away from the US). 8 months of texting, calling and Skyping later, he ended up coming to FL to visit me. When I went to pick him up from the airport, it felt like I had already met him a hundred times and I felt soooo comfy! I of course had butterflies in my stomach from excitement, but it just felt so right. We continued dating as a long distance relationship for about 3 1/2 years with limited visitation from both sides. He then decided he is going to permanently move down to FL, and so he did! He has been down here permanently for about 10 months now; we went from being 12 hours (by flight) apart to being a 10 minute drive distance from one another <3… In total, we have been together for 4 1/2 years. We had been talking about getting married ever since he moved down to FL, but I always thought it was going to happen around my birthday (September)…

How He Asked

It happened on Saturday, July 15th to be exact :) He wanted to take me and my sister (who was in on it the entire time- she took the photos) out for breakfast and I said of course! Who says no to breakfast? So as we’re getting ready to leave, my sister says “Deniz, THAT’S what you’re wearing?” with a disgusted look on her face. I mean, I thought we were just going to eat so I didn’t do my hair or my makeup, or dress nicely.. lol… Anyways, we were about to leave and I get a FaceTime call from Omer saying he needs me to come upstairs when I get to his place because he needs to show me a very important email from a venue we have been wanting ever since we started talking about marriage. He said its really good news so I’m thinking they are willing to give us a good price on it and everything… So we get there and once I get in the lobby with my sister, Omer is there and instantly starts to blindfold me. I still don’t think anything at this point which is so not like me, but again, I’m not expecting anything anytime soon. We get upstairs to his apartment (still blindfolded), he sits me down on his couch and I’m thinking, “OMG this email is going to be a great one I can just feel it!”, little did I know something even better was about to happen. My sister comes up behind the chair, takes the blindfold off of me and there he was, down on one knee asking me to marry him. I don’t even remember what he was saying to me, all I remember is him saying, “will you marry me?” and me saying, “yes!” and hugging him instantly! He made me the happiest girl in the world at that moment, and I will never ever forget it <3
