Dena and Brendan
How We Met
Brendan and I met through my friend Alyse who also happened to be Brendan’s Sister-In-Law’s sister. One evening Alyse texted me and asked if I was seeing anyone and I said no and she went on about someone she would like me to meet. The following Sunday, Alyse introduced us at church and we talked for a bit then a group of us went out for dinner. From that first introduction I thought Brendan was very cute and funny and someone who I’d like to get to know more, however he didn’t ask for my number at the end of dinner so I thought well…that was a waste. Much to my surprise the next evening I got a phone call from Brendan asking if I wanted to go the hockey game with him and of corse I said yes. After the hockey game date we went on a couple dates after that but then lost touch. I knew I really liked Brendan but the timing seemed off for both of us to start dating.
Over the next 9 months I ran into Brendan twice at church and we would just engage in small talk then go our separate ways. Even though I only saw him twice over those 9 months, I couldn’t seem to get him off of my mind. I would always somehow be reminded of him but I could not understand why because we only went on a few dates. Then one Sunday at church, (about 4 months after I saw him last) we ran into each other again and started talking and he invited me out to eat with some of his friends.
When I got home later that night I walked into my condo and just froze and thought to myself “I’m going to marry Brendan some day”. I thought I was crazy to think such a thing because it was so ridiculous and cliche but it was just an overwhelming feeling I had. We began going on dates again and with every passing date I started to like him more and more and we started to decided to make it official. In the summer, I went on a vacation with him and his family to New York and I believe that New York solidified that I was head over heels in love with Brendan.
How He Asked
On Christmas Eve, Brendan surprised me with a box filled with a plane ticket to New York, tickets to 2 broadway shows and pictures of us from our last trip to New York. I was so surprised because I thought we were planning on going to Phoenix right after Christmas. So on December 26 we arrive in New York, and I was sick with a bad cold and fever so as soon as we got to the hotel I went straight to bed. The next day we went out for lunch, went shopping, walked around Times Square and stocked up on a lot of cold medicine because I still wasn’t feeling well. Brendan told me that we had dinner reservations at the Rainbow Room at 4:30 P.M. so we went back to the hotel and got ready. Brendan told me to dress fancy because it was a really nice restaurant. I told him to pick out my dress because I wasn’t sure what level of fancy this place was. So we left the hotel and started walking to the restaurant, we got a little bit lost and I started to worry because it was already past 4:30 P.M. and Brendan had told me that 4:30 was the only reservation spot they had open so I was thinking we were going to lose our reservation because we were running late.
As we were walking I noticed we were walking past a sign that said The Rainbow Room and I had mentioned this to Brendan and he said he knew but we were going to enter through a different entrance. We were now at Rockefeller Centre and was walking around and Brendan wanted to take pictures of me in front of the big Christmas tree. I kept telling him no, because we were late for dinner but he said we had a two hour window to get there so we would be okay. I didn’t question it because we were in New York and maybe they did things differently here. So we took some pictures of the Christmas tree and tried to take selfies of ourselves but it wasn’t working out so Brendan asked these 2 strangers to take our picture.
They took our picture with my phone and as I was looking at the photos Brendan says “I have something to ask you” I thought it was bad news because there were tears in his eyes. I began to rub his back and kept saying “It’s okay Brendan, don’t cry, you’ll make me cry!” He began to speak some more and I figured it wasn’t bad news because he had a smile on his face even though there were tears in his eyes. Then much to my surprise, he got on one knee and asked me to marry him.
At this point, a huge crowd gathered around us and they were all cheering, clapping and taking pictures and videos. I was so surprised that I didn’t give Brendan an answer, so he had to ask me again and I said yes! A few seconds later I learned that those two strangers he asked to take our picture weren’t really strangers, they were photographers Brendan had hired to photograph the proposal!
After the proposal we went on an hour long photoshoot and Brendan confessed there was no dinner reservation at the Rainbow Room and we actually had 8:00 P.M reservation at Asiate which is a beautiful restaurant on the 35th floor of the Mandarin Hotel which overlooks Central Park. It was amazing! The the next day Brendan had scheduled a two hour photoshoot to take more engagement photos. Brendan’s proposal was more than I could ever think or dream of. He put so much time and effort into how it was going to be and it was such a special moment that we will both treasure forever!
