Danielle and Patrick
How We Met
Patrick and I met through mutual friends. One of my friends from college was dating (and recently married) one of Patrick’s friends from his college track team. Although we later realized we had actually been introduced back in 2011, we were both single and reintroduced at SanataCon in December of 2015 (an annual bar crawl through NYC where everyone dresses in festive, Christmas-themed outfits). We immediately had a lot to talk about and hit it off, capping off the evening with an appetizer sampler at IHOP. After that night, we began talking more and more with each passing day. A couple weeks later, a blizzard hit New York City prompting a snow day off from work for both of us. We decided to meet for lunch at Westville in the East Village near my apartment. That was our first date and the rest was history!
How He Asked
Patrick and I had planned an exciting trip to Europe together, stopping first in Copenhagen, Denmark, then Krakow, Poland. He had once told me that Krakow was a magical city and he always envisioned going back one day with someone special. He had made a dinner reservation for us at Hotel Stary, a beautiful hotel near the old city center, and at the end of the meal he suggested dessert. After such a delicious feast, I was hesitant, but was easily convinced to split something. Our server took our order and asked if we wanted to enjoy dessert on the rooftop terrace.
When we stepped off the elevator, a violinist and guitarist were already playing the acoustic version of “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri – at this point my heart started racing like crazy, but Patrick still seemed as cool as a cucumber as we were seated. After a few minutes of chatting, he suggested that we stand up to enjoy the beautiful and historic view. As we took it in, the musicians began to play “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran, one of my very favorite songs, and Patrick asked me to dance. Before the song had even ended, he spun me and got down on one knee to ask me “to do him the honor of being his wife.”
Though shaking like crazy with excitement, I emphatically said yes, and he placed the most gorgeous ring I’d ever seen on my finger.
Everyone on the rooftop burst into applause, and we spent the rest of the night and trip celebrating.
