Danielle and Bryan
How We Met: My sorority was paired together with his fraternity my freshman year of college during Greek Week at Iowa State University. We both had to go to a community service event to receive points for our pairing and after making fun of him for his interesting attire (he had just rolled out of bed since it was at 7:30 am on a Saturday) he added me on Facebook and started poking me.
I literally hate when people poke me on Facebook, so I messaged him asking him to stop and since that day we have never stopped talking.
How He Asked: I had a public health internship in Ghana, Africa this summer so I was gone for a month and a half. When I came home from Africa, 2 weeks later, I had planned to go to Hilton Head, South Carolina with Bryan and his family on their family vacation.
I was really excited to travel to a warm destination with him and it was even more exciting for me because this was the first vacation I had ever been on with someone other than my family. While in Africa, Bryan messaged me on Facebook and said he got me a birthday present– he had hired a photographer to take couples pictures on the beach.
I was ecstatic, because I love pictures and he is not much of a fan of them, so I was happy he thought of something so sweet to do with me. I was kind of on to him though, and right away messaged one of my friends telling her that I thought he was going to propose to me during pictures. I tell Bryan everything, so of course I told him that I figured him out. He basically then said, “Do you think I’m made out of money?
A trip to South Carolina plus pictures plus an engagement ring is really expensive.” I was like alright, that is true and kind of stopped thinking about it. I did not want to get my hopes up for them to be shot down. Fast forward to me returning home from Africa and then traveling to South Carolina with Bryan. On that Sunday we had pictures so we met up with the photographer who was wonderful and she had us take all sorts of pictures.
I was in heaven and even during the shoot I told him, “Get used to this, because you are going to have to do it again when we are engaged!” When our shoot was finally coming to a close, the photographer asked us if we wanted to do a few pictures of Bryan throwing me into the water. I thought this was a fun idea so I was all for it! Bryan on the other hand asked to take a few more pictures out of the water first.
I just thought he was being a girl and didn’t want to get his Sperry’s wet! However, he looked at me and said, “So you were kind of on to me.” I said, “What?” even though I knew exactly what he meant.
He then proceeded to pull a ring out of his pocket which he wrapped in tissue paper so I wouldn’t be able to see it in his shorts, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.
