Craig and Nicki
how we met
Nicki: I met Craig at our college dorm building in February of 2013. I was the RA (resident assistant) for the same living community that Craig happened to live in. One night, I was recruiting residents to go to a mandatory safety meeting in one of the buildings. Because it wasn’t our most popular event, I tried to get people to come by offering them donuts for their time. As I went door-to-door, I stopped by one of the floor’s kitchens and saw a group of guys hanging out…one of which was Craig. I asked the guys if they could come to the meeting and Craig quickly jumped at the opportunity to get the free donuts and followed me to the meeting. I was secretly excited because the most handsome guy of the bunch was the one that decided to come! We didn’t talk much at the meeting but little did I know that we would soon meet again.
Two weeks later I was invited on Facebook by a friend to go to a beach sunrise worship session. Before I signed myself up for waking up before the sun on a Saturday, I checked the guest list to see if any of my friends were going. While looking at the list, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that Craig, the cute guy I met the other day, was attending!
After the worship session, our group went out to breakfast. Even though I had plans to get to, I canceled them because I knew Craig was going to breakfast. It was obvious that Craig was making an effort to get to know me. In fact, we ended up talking almost the whole time to just each other. I knew that very day, without a doubt in my mind, that I had met the man I was going to marry.
Craig: Nicki and I first met in our college dorm building in February of 2013 because I was apart of a college Bible study that met in the dorms every week. I originally was not planning on going to Bible study this week because I had a lot of homework, but I decided to go anyways. Once we started with our study, I told my friends how stuffed I was because of my big dinner. One guy brought cookies but I couldn’t risk eating another bite! That was true until…. Nicki walked into the dorm kitchen/common area and told us that she was an RA and that they were having a monthly program with free doughnuts. Even though I had no interest in the doughnuts I quickly jumped up and followed Nicki, with the hopes of trying to stir up a conversation. I told Nicki about our Bible study and we found out that we both went to the same church. Even though our conversation was short, I knew I wanted to get to know her more.
For the next two weeks, I prayed like crazy for a chance to meet Nicki again because I knew from the moment we met that she was special. Even though that sounds so crazy because I didn’t really know her! My friend invited me to a sunrise beach worship and prayer time on that Saturday and I decided to go, even though the thought of waking up at the crack of dawn didn’t sound like much fun! After about 45 minutes of singing worship songs and praying, I began to pray for Nicki. It was then that I finally stopped worrying about meeting Nicki. I recognized that God knew what was best for me and for the first time in two weeks I felt complete peace. To my surprise, once I opened my eyes after praying I saw Nicki walk up to our group! She told us that she slept through her first alarm. I had the biggest smile on my face because I had no idea she would be coming. I laughed to myself about the crazy (and awesome) timing of my prayer.
Once we stopped singing and praying, I went up to Nicki and said “Hey! I think we have actually met before in the dorm.” Nicki took some time to think about it and with a confused look on her face she said, “Oh yeah, I think I remember you…” Even though I was super bummed, I later found out that she was just playing hard to get!
Our group of friends decided to go out to breakfast after our beach time and I quickly jumped at the opportunity again because I wanted to talk to Nicki. I made an effort to sit next to Nicki and even though there were about 15 other people, we both talked to each other the entire time. I found out about her love (and addiction) to coffee and I later used that as a crutch for our first date!
We talked for hours on our first date and we had so much fun together! Everything was so natural for us and it was almost like we had known each other for years. Soon after, I felt complete peace that she was the one who I wanted to marry.
how he asked
I knew I wanted to propose to Nicki this past summer while I was living and working in Atlanta. My original plan was to propose soon after Nicki’s trip to Honduras, where she was a working at an orphanage and malnutrition center with one of her best friends. I had everything all set – an awesome photographer, a great location, flowers, and decorations. However, all of my plans changed when Nicki returned back home and she was diagnosed with dengue fever, a mosquito borne sickness. I was super bummed to find out that she was so sick and that all of my planning was a waste!
Once Nicki was feeling better, her parents planned a trip to North Carolina where they have a cabin. Not only was I able to join them for their trip, but I also convinced Nicki that we should drive back down to Atlanta and spend a few more days exploring parts of Atlanta that we hadn’t been to yet. Little did she know that my only plan in Atlanta was to propose!
When we finally got to Atlanta, all of my plans were finally set…again! I told Nicki that I wanted to take her to a nice dinner but to bring a sweater and a change of casual clothes because I wanted to do something fun after. I told her that she would have two options; we could do something that may make her feel a little cold and would require a sweater or that we could do something fun that would be more casual and would require track shorts and tennis shoes. The funny part of this was that I actually didn’t have anything planned for after our dinner because I only wanted to propose and celebrate after. I just wanted to throw her off! Even though I thought it was the perfect idea, Nicki didn’t understand why she was getting all dressed up only to potentially be casual later. Nicki got kind of frustrated with the situation and only wanted to dress casual and go to a casual dinner but after some time, I convinced her to wear a dress.
We were in a rush to get to dinner because my photographer and friends, who helped with the set up, were planning on getting there at a set time. Not only were we stuck in the worst traffic I had ever been in, but it was pouring down rain for the entire drive! I was getting worried and as time went on, Nicki began asking me why my hands were so sweaty. Needless to say, I was dying on the inside because I didn’t want my plans to fall through… for the second time!
When we were only a few miles away from my proposal spot, the traffic cleared up and the sun came out for the most beautiful sunset that I had ever seen! I parked my car and walked to the path where everything was set up.
Once we started walking on the path Nicki saw my decorations and was convinced that we needed to leave because the proposal was for someone else. I laughed and told her to “keep on walking and to take a closer look.”
Once she realized what was going on she screamed, “Yes, yes yes! I don’t even want the ring, I said yes already!” I laughed and proceeded to give her a pretty long talk about why I loved her and why I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. After all, I spent a lot of time planning my proposal so I didn’t want it to be too quick! Even though I had a lot to say, Nicki kept interrupting me with hugs and kisses.
Even though the planning process was crazy, I wouldn’t change it for the world! Not only was Nicki completely surprised, seeing the excitement on her face made the hard work all worth while! We are so excited to see what God has in store for us together!
