Courtney and James
How We Met
James and I met when I was just 15 years old, a grade 10 student. I was dating somebody else at the time, but that didn’t seem to bother him. Although, I had always thought he was funny and whenever we used to see each other we always had a good laugh. After losing communication for numerous years, and recently getting out of a relationship, I pulled into a nearly empty plaza, and parked right beside a car that was leaving (out of all spots that were available). When I looked over, I seen James and screamed “Cliffy” a name I gave him when we were in high school because he reminded me of Clifford the Big Red Dog when we wore this one particular hat. We talked for 10 minutes before he left and haven’t stopped talking since that day. Since then, we have always said that fate brought us together that day. More than 4.5 years later, James proposed to me in the city of love, a place where he made all of my dreams come true.
How He Asked
On September 30, I walked into work and was immediately surrounded by everyone there. I was handed a card said to be from James – inside a poem about our love story and instructions informing me that I was going to Paris, France that night, the place I had always dreamt of going. The list of instructions told me what I was to do up until that night at 10 pm when my flight was leaving. I was not to communicate with James unless of an emergency. When I arrived in Paris on October 1 at 11:00 am, a man was waiting for me, my name on a big sign, just like the letter indicated. I was taken to my hotel and there, another card. Each card with a custom poem, outlining our life so far together.
As I stood in my hotel room crying like a child reading another poem, there were further instructions to get ready as someone would pick me up at 2:30 pm to bring me to the Eiffel Tower. When I was dropped off at my final destination, Pont de Bir-Hakeim, I was told to enjoy the view (still alone).
Finally, a stranger approached and gave me my final card, inside yet another poem that at the end read ‘turn around as I am walking towards you with my hands full of flowers’. There James was with 100 hand picked roses…
This was the moment the love of my life asked me to marry him in the city of love. Of course I said yes! (I had always told him I wanted photos and video of the proposal… he even managed to get both, half way around the world).
