Hope and Connor
How We Met
Connor and I grew up twenty-five minutes from each other but had never met until freshman year of college. On the second day of classes, I entered our required health class with my friend Molly. We got there right as introductions were starting so we took the only two seats left in the front right corner of the room. Finally, the introductions made it to the middle of the classroom when I heard the classmate say they were from Garner – which, like I said, is twenty-five minutes from where I grew up. Naturally I perked up and my eyes were drawn to this really attractive guy, at which point I made a mental note to look him up on social media when I got back to my dorm (I mean what girl doesn’t do that these days, especially when you’re bound to have mutual friends?!).
When I got back to my dorm I spent a little while scrolling through social media when the “cute guy from my health class” popped up. At that point I spilled the story to my roommate and we looked through his profile pictures and discovered he played soccer (just like I did), baseball and football. Then things got even more ironic when I realized he wore number eight and sixteen just like I had always worn! Satisfied with learning the “cute guy from health class” had a name, I couldn’t wait until our next health class.
For the next couple weeks my little baby crush continuously grew every time I saw Connor in health class, in the dining hall or in the library – which became pretty obvious when I was telling Molly about my crush on Connor as he was walking towards us in the hallway and she fully extended her arm, pointed at him and said, “Who…him?!” As you can imagine this drew his attention and my face immediately turned beat red.
From there I drew back a little bit, because I was so embarrassed, and “let it be” – that is until I went to the library with my roommate Rachael and my friend Hannah. While taking a break from writing a paper I peeked over our couch to look around the library. At that point I immediately made eye contact with non-other than Connor! Totally in shock, as we had no idea he was there, I quickly crouched down and told Rachael and Hannah what had just happened. And to make a long story short(er) the eye contact incident happened two more times!! Fifteen minutes or so after Rachael and Hannah left our booth I get a tap on the shoulder, turn around and immediately turn beat red…it was Connor!
He said, “Mind if bother you for a moment?” I shook my head “no” and he sat down across from me. We proceeded to chat back and forth for over an hour – keep in mind we had NEVER spoken before but just knew each other from class and making eye contact on campus – and at the end of our conversation he slid a notecard with his first name and phone number on it. He left me with the notecard and said, “Feel free to call or text me if you ever want to study for health class or get dinner sometime.” From there the rest is history…almost!
How He Asked
From the time Connor and I met freshman year of college, our five years of dating have been full of adventures – which I often times planned since I work in public relations and have to have everything planned. So for our five-year anniversary Connor was set on breaking my “type ‘A’ness” and planning a surprise trip for us. Although the suspense of not knowing where we were going was killing me (and also made it really hard to know how to pack) I hopped in the car and embraced the unknown. Before I knew it five and a half hours had passed and we arrived in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where Connor finally spilled the news that we were going into D.C. (which had been on our bucket list since we both hadn’t been) the following day!
The next morning, we got our things (including Connor’s dad’s nice camera), drove to the metro station and hopped on the blue line into D.C. We got off at the Metro Center stop so we could explore the couple of blocks leading up to the Washington Monument and take touristy photos – just as we had done when he came to visit me when I lived in New York City. After getting our photos at the Washington Monument, we headed down to the Reflecting Pool – where Connor decided we would take the right hand side’s pathway heading towards the Lincoln Memorial after I got a photo with the Memorial in the background. As we casually strolled along the walkway, we noticed a couple walking behind us that were carrying a similar camera to what we had. Eager to have a photo of us, other than an iPhone selfie, Connor approached the husband and wife, asked them to take a photo of us and showed them how to use the camera (or so I thought).
Connor then came over to me, offered to put my purse in his book bag and we posed for the photo. After a couple photos Connor suggested we change backgrounds. I agreed, fixed my hair and started to turn around – at which point Connor grabbed my left hand, turned me around, got down on one knee (all seemingly in one motion), said my full name, recounted our love story…and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him!!! I lost my breath, freaked out (from happiness of course) and cried all at the same time – all while looking down at the amazing blessing God brought into my life. As uncontrollable tears streamed down my face, I managed to mutter “yes!” at which point Connor slipped the most beautiful ring on my finger, kissed me and embraced my ugly cry (thank God for sunglasses). So here’s to my special man who always keeps me on my toes and forces spontaneity in my life, and the random married couple who stopped what they were doing and agreed to capturing Connor’s plan all on camera.
