Claire and Eric
How We Met
Eric and I went to the same school and had mutual friends but we didn’t start dating until our freshman year at The University of Alabama. We didn’t really spend any time together until our second semester right before classes started back. All it took was one night of us talking (and sharing an orange) for us to become inseparable.
I knew him but I never realized that he would be the funniest, most caring guy I had ever met. We both knew from the start that this was something special. We got a dog together after just a few months of dating and rarely spent a day without each other. We continued dating all throughout college knowing that we wanted to spend forever together.
How He Asked
We had planned a trip to Nashville, Tennessee with two of our best friends Rachel and Alex. To me it seemed like Rachel had planned the trip, wanting to spend some time together since we had all spent the summer apart. Little did I know that Eric had the whole thing planned for our engagement and Rachel and Alex were in on it. After talking with my parents and getting their blessing, he got both of our families involved too, ready to ambush us once it happened. We drove down Friday night and woke up early Saturday morning so we didn’t waste any of the day. On our way to breakfast we stopped on the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge to take pictures with the Nashville skyline in the background.
The year before Eric had taken a panoramic picture on that bridge with me facing away from the camera. He told me he wanted to recreate it so I stood facing the city while he was behind me. He then tapped me on the shoulder and when I turned around he was down on one knee while our friends captured the whole thing on camera.
I immediately began crying and the moment that I had always imagined of me saying, “Yes!” turned into me giving the best nod I could manage while I listened to the man I have loved for 4 1/2 years ask me to spend the rest of our lives together as husband and wife.
I immediately called my mom and found out they were already in Nashville ready to share in the excitement. We spent the rest of the day enjoying the city with our friends and family. That night Eric and our families surprised me with dinner at The Standard at the Smith House. It was a wonderful night filled with love, champagne, and delicious food. I could not have imagined a better way to spend the day or a better person to share it with.
