Christmas Day Proposal at Rockefeller Plaza

I had become Facebook friends with his brother after applying for a film job with their company. A few weeks later, David sent me a friends request, which I ignored, because I had no idea who he was. I finally accepted the request (I thought he was handsome, after all) and after a vigorous round of admiring each other’s pictures, he initiated conversation with me.

At the time, he was working overseas, so all we had were messages. A month later, he came home and we eventually met (although, at the time, I lived a few hours away). For me, I knew my life was going to change the moment I saw him. It hit me like a ton of bricks that, without any intention, the course of my future had just changed forever.

Over the course of the next few months began talking more and seeing more of each other. I eventually moved. A year later, we would find ourselves celebrating Christmas in New York, something I had always dreamed of.

How he asked: (By David) After months of tossing ideas around, I finally came up with an idea that I thought would be as memorable as possible. I had originally planned to decorate our home with candles, photos of us and music, and propose next to the Christmas tree at home. But while making the plans for our vacation to NYC, I stumbled on the Rockefeller skating rink website, and saw the rink was available for rental for proposals, and immediately began searching for a co conspirator to arrange things in New York with discretion.

When Kari mentioned her fondness with the idea of seeing the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, I knew thats where I would do it. I found Fallon Carter Weddings on Google and called to see if they could help with proposals as well, and Fallon was highly eager to help! I still wanted to incorporate the photos of us and “our song” in the proposal some how, so after weeks of adapting my original “at home” plan to NYC, and Fallon finding extra people to skate around us holding the photos while I proposed, the plan was complete.

How he asked: (By Kari) We decided to spend Christmas in New York because we both love NYC and it’s magical during the holidays. We flew in from Dallas on Christmas day. David had booked our Engagement on Ice session (I had no idea) at Rockefeller Center at 6:30 p.m.

We headed down to the rink and after skating for 90 minutes, at 8 p.m., they began to clear the ice. I was worried we would get in trouble for standing around and trying to take photos. I kept telling him we should clear the ice, but he wouldn’t let me and insisted we take another picture. Suddenly (just as he had planned) the employees were skating around us holding photos of us. I was so confused. I just kept wondering why the employees had our pictures. David spun me in a few circles on our skates (a miracle in itself, because we live in Texas are not so great on ice skates). I just kept looking at him trying to put the pieces together. Then, I heard Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” blasting throughout the rink. It’s one of our special songs. A crowd of at least a thousand people began cheering as David said “I’ve been planning this for a long time.” On the empty rink, in front of thousands of people, under the glowing lights of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, David dropped to one knee on the ice and asked me to marry him. I said yes!

After a few embraces, and reminding him that he had to put the ring on my finger (he was so nervous, he tried to hand me the box), we took a “victory lap” around the rink as everyone cheered us on.

What a magical moment. For a few minutes, my life mirrored every romantic hollywood film a woman dreams to be a part of. I just wish someone there had captured it on video!
