How We Met
I never believed in fate or destiny or any of that, but our story is unheard of. I was 16 years old, a high school senior and didn’t care for anything but school. He changed it all. We met through mutual friends when we were both seniors at local high schools and we became close. Since 2006 we have been friends, and it was love all along. We have been there each other- high school prom, graduation, college, nights we can’t remember, and time we can’t forget. He came to my high school choral concerts, and he was biggest supporter when I went through career changes and life events. I am lucky to have found him.
How He Asked
Our friends joke around to say they knew this was coming, but we have managed to accomplish something unimaginable. I always said I would never marry, but he changed my life upside down. All week I was so mad at him- I was having a difficult week at work, and my grad schoolwork was consuming me. He seemed to be so busy and I just didn’t understand why he was being off. I thought it was work stress and refused to talk to him when he would call or text. He called me on Friday evening and said he wanted to make it up to me and take me to dinner on Saturday night. I said fine, but that I was still mad at him. He picked me up our normal saturday date nighttime, around 4pm and he was dressed up. I didn’t think much of it since we both usually dress up for our weekly dates- it didn’t matter where went or what we did, that was something we had done for each other. When I asked him where we were going, he simply said dinner in DC. Again, I didn’t think much since that’s a pretty standard response he gives me on a weekly basis. When we parked our car in DC, he said that since we were early for our reservation, we could walk around. I immediately began to complain that I hated walking and why couldn’t we just go sit somewhere. He calmly pointed out that after all these years of knowing each other, we had never visited our favorite monuments. I thought that was odd, but there was no way he was to propose, he knew I wanted my parents to be there for the proposal and they lived 2 hours away and I had just gotten off the phone with them. We walked around my favorite monument, the Jefferson for a bit and then proceeded to the Lincoln memorial- it was crowded as usual, but he promised that we would go to dinner after this since our reservation time was coming up. After a while he suggested that we leave since it woud take a while to go to eat. I don’t remember exactly what we were talking about but before I knew it he was saying that he had a question, and then everything was such a blur. He was on his knees, in front of the Lincoln memorial asking me to marry him!
I never in a million years would have guessed that my life would have been transformed in the way it has. He hired a photographer to follow us around to make sure he captured every moment. We then proceeded to dinner where both of our families surprised me and it was perfect. It was the exact moment, exact place I needed to be, and with the people I love the most. It is our fate. It is our destiny.
