Christina and Matthew
How We Met
Matt & I met on Facebook back in June 2009. I went to an all-girls Catholic high school and he went to an all-boys Catholic high school down the road. I was searching on Facebook for a boy named Matthew whose mother worked with my dad. Right under the request for him was another boy named Matt who went to the same school as this other boy and I thought, “oh he’s cute, I’ll request him too”. That night, he messaged me on Facebook saying, “hey cutie, what’s up?” I remember feeling such butterflies! We met up that next week on the last day of school. Matt & I spent the whole week together and had the most amazing time. We saw our first movie together during this week, My Sister’s Keeper, where I cried hysterically in front of him.
Matt walked blocks to see me just to spend time with me, I still remember the spot where we first held hands. I went away on vacation for a few days and when I came back, he asked me to be his girlfriend July 5, 2009 – I just turned 17 and he was turning 17 that month. He worked at a famous pizzeria/ice cream spot for 10 years in Brooklyn, NY, called L & B Spumoni Gardens. Most of my summer nights were filled with going to visit him and standing by the window talking to him by the ice cream section. When the time came to decided where we were going to college, even thought we weren’t dating for very long, Matt & I decided to go to the same school together. We both participated in recruitment and became members of a fraternity, Alpha Phi Delta National Fraternity and sorority, Alpha Xi Delta National Sorority.
We experienced so much together starting from our senior year in high school to our senior year of college, to me starting my first full time job as a school counselor, and him getting accepted to and beginning dental school. We faced some challenges but each one made us a stronger couple and every year we grow together where we continue to learn more about each other. The past 8 and a half years have been the best years of our lives.
How He Asked
Starting from when I was a little girl, my parents and I would visit a beautiful Victorian Castle Upstate New York in New Paltz, called Mohonk Mountain House. We would go every year and enjoy hiking to Sky Top, canoeing on the lake, and exploring the gardens and gazebos. This was home away from home and every time I returned, I took a little piece back with me. When I met Matt, I took him with me to Mohonk any chance we got. The first time we went, we carved our initials into a tree house gazebo in the garden. Matt knew that Mohonk holds a very special place in my heart. He planned for us to go before he started dental school in the fall. When we arrived, I breathed in the fresh, crisp upstate air and felt like I was home. Matt said, “Let’s go to the tree house where we carved our initials”, so we walked holding hands through the garden together. I noticed a photographer taking pictures of flowers but didn’t make the connection that she was there for us. He quieted down, which started to get me anxious, I felt something different in the air surrounding us. Matt then moved me by the shoulders saying, “Alright, come here, close your eyes”, and placed my hands over my face.
From that moment, I knew what was happening. I heard the camera shutter sound a bunch of times while my eyes were closed and in my mind, all I was thinking was, “it’s happening, it’s happening, it’s happening!” When Matt told me to open my eyes, I saw him down on one knee, holding a beautiful ring. He told me I said out loud, “OH MY GOD, IT’S HAPPENING”, but I can’t even remember because it was such a whirlwind.
I honestly don’t even remember him asking me to marry him so he had to repeat himself, which at that point, I said “YES!”. Matt hired a photographer who worked at Mohonk who took pictures of us all around the garden and he surprised me with inviting our families up to enjoy the day and have Sunday brunch. It was a moment we spoke about for a while and I couldn’t have imagined it being anymore perfect.
Mohonk is a very important place to me and now it is a special place for us. There is a video when I was 3 years old in the tree house in the garden explaining how I was looking down at all of the beautiful flowers. It’s an overwhelming feeling that 22 years later I was proposed to in the same garden while others looked down out of the tree house at Matt & I.
