How We Met

Alex and I have always been long distance, but I suppose that is to be expected when you love someone in the military. Alex and I met through mutual friends during our last semester at the University of South Carolina, and we began our relationship the autumn after we graduated. Alex was commissioned as an officer in the Marine Corps. I was going to medical school in Charleston and was commissioned as an officer in the Air Force. Because our careers took us in such different directions, we adapted to the long-distance lifestyle. Since our beginning, we have been across the state, across the continent, and now, we are literally on opposite sides of the world while Alex is stationed in Japan for a minimum of two more years. No substitute exists which can replace the joy of being together in person, but we cherish these opportunities to travel and explore so many exciting places together, and we appreciate how close we have become through the countless hours spent talking on the phone. Long distance relationships are tough, but the Lord has walked with us every step of the way, and the light at the end of the tunnel keeps us going!

How He Asked

Alex was visiting me in Charleston for a few days before his move to Japan. I came home from an exhausting day of medical school to find out he made reservations to celebrate our two year anniversary a little early since he would already be in Japan on our actual anniversary. We enjoyed a lovely dinner in downtown Charleston at a wonderful restaurant called Slightly North of Broad… excellent food and an enchanting atmosphere! We concluded the evening with a romantic walk through Charleston’s Waterfront Park to the end of a pier where we spent some time talking and admiring the stars. Since Alex and I love to shag dance, he began leading us in a dance on the pier. We have a favorite move we love to do: he twirls me around, we rock apart, then he pulls me in real close to seal it with a kiss. This time, however, he reached into his pocket, told me he’d been meaning to ask me something, and dropped down on one knee! When he asked me to marry him, I immediately said yes and started sobbing tears of joy! I literally could not stop crying and hugging him. Eventually, he stood up and asked me if I’d like to try on my ring, which of course I eagerly did! It’s the most amazing feeling in the world knowing I’m officially going to spend the rest of my life with my best friend!
