How We Met

How we met? His Story… I can remember tagging along to my best friend Charles’ work [friends] hangout events from time to time and seeing Christie. After being introduced, I always noticed there was something special about her and I sensed it from the very beginning. To play it safe, I would be sure to speak to her, be polite and greet her with a hug and friendly “hey” whenever I saw her. She was super nice to me in return. I particularly remember one hangout, she gave me a “real” hug (lol) when I got to the party and she kept striking up conversations with me, almost intentionally. I took notice of it all but I simply brushed it off thinking, maybe she’s a just being nice, or “man, she’s a really big music/Sunday Best fan” etc. So, “don’t play yourself bruh”. Later on into the party, the group of work friends were discussing plans for a group vacation trip.

She mentioned she’d love to go, however she would enjoy the trip much more if she had a “significant other”. Well, you know me? Being as smooth as I often am, offered to be her “fake boo” for the duration of the trip. Yep, she shot me all the way down!!! However, I was glad she didn’t fall for the “fake boo” trick. She was much too good for that and it was just what I needed. From that moment I became that much more interested in pursuing her and learning who she truly was…Let the chase begin. I can remember ending that evening being sure to walk her to her car and “seal the deal” so to speak. As we sat in her car for a little [nervous] small talk, I asked her to put her number in my phone; mainly because I was too nervous to do it myself. Lastly, I can still replay the little twinkle in the *side eye* she gave me as I asked if she’d be “interested in getting to know each other better”. The rest is reality…

Where to Propose in Orlando, FL

Her Story… Jamel and I met through his best friend, Charles, who was also my co-worker at the time. We crossed paths a couple of times before we had an actual conversation. It was extremely hard for me to read him which made him more attractive to me. I told myself that the next time I saw him I would strike up a conversation. My co-workers and I decided to have a get together shortly after I came up with my plan of action. I arrived at our event and mingled. About an hour or so someone announced “Charles said he’s on his way.” My first thought was, “I hope he’s bringing Jamel.” I remember it like yesterday, in walks Charles and right behind him was my Jamel. I was so excited but of course I kept it cool. After he (Jamel) got settled, I went over and struck up a conversation about music and his experience on BET’s Sunday Best. We chatted for a while and started mingling with others.

About an hour or so later someone asked him to sing, he obliged us and sang Musiq Soulchild’s “So Beautiful” but sang it to the lady next to me. Needless to say I was disappointed, but figured I would let it be. Fast forward a few months, my co-workers and I decided to get together again. This time I was extremely tired, didn’t have anything to wear and said I wasn’t going. I started getting the “where are you?” texts and decided to show my face and sneak out. I was there for a couple of hours and in walks Charles and Jamel. I was still excited to see Jamel because he was a genuinely nice and cool person. This time our conversation was organic and we didn’t talk about music. We talked the entire night, the butterflies were alive and active in my stomach.

At the end of the night Jamel walked me to my car and said “I would like to take you out and get to know you better” I replied, “I would like that too.” After we exchanged numbers I told him that I was horrible with the phone and preferred texting so of course he called everyday lol. The time had come for our first date, and it was the best date of my life. Jamel is a planner (as you can see from our engagement video) and very detailed. During the conversations prior to our date I talked about places I’d never been and things I wish I had time to do. Our first date consisted of all of those things. When he dropped me off at home I knew he was someone special and heaven sent which was confirmed January 5, 2017 when he asked me to be his wife.

How He Asked

I surprised Christie with a surprise trip to sunny Orlando, FL to escape the cold Chicago winter. The morning of our engagement proposal, following me heading out early to prepare, I told her to meet me for breakfast. During breakfast I revealed two of my surprises; a proto shoot and a professional makeup artist who would be arriving in 15 minutes. Once we were dressed, we headed out to Cypress Grove Park. I told her that there would also be videographers there to assist the photographer with a special project she was working on. We searched for the perfect spot to shoot and at that moment I asked if I could read a letter I wrote for her. I read her the following letter…

Dearest Christie, Today is a special day. Today, I celebrate you and we celebrate love. You’ve shown me a love I never knew existed. You’ve shown me the reality of an everyday love. You’ve shown me a, this is the best peanut butter and jelly sandwich I’ve ever had” [made with love] type of love. You are my best friend. You believe in me. You challenge me to be better. I know there is nothing I can’t do and nothing we can’t accomplish together. I’ve never had anyone believe in me more or cause me to believe in myself more than you have. You are far more than the woman of my dreams. You are exceedingly and abundantly more than I could have ever imagined. I adore you, I love you. You are God’s princess and you are my queen. You’ve done nothing but add value to my life since the day we met.

You are the most selflessly loving person I have ever met. You require more of me and challenge me to be a great man. You are the most incredibly beautiful woman in the world and it would make me the happiest man in the world if I could “get on your nerves” for the rest of our lives……as your husband. . . . Christie Lynn Khalid, will you Please Marry Me . . . LOVE, Jamel
