Anna and Chris
How We Met
Chris and I met when we were freshmen in high school. We were friends for a while, then got closer and closer. By our senior year we were best friends, and we started dating in November 2012. I’ll always remember our first official date, in which we played display games at Best Buy and then jumped in a humongous pile of leaves. Chris is my best friend, and he never worries about social norms. He told me he loved me the date after he asked me out, and he told me he wanted to marry me three weeks after we started dating. We were so young, that I never quite believed him. When we went to college the next year, we briefly broke up because we thought it was the right thing to do. Living two states away is difficult when you don’t have cars and are navigating new cities. However, Chris came to visit me during his fall break and we got back together like we were never apart. Long distance has been hard, but so worth it. We share calls, texts, Facebook stickers, and even do quizzes over Skype together.
How He Asked
Our junior year of college was a particularly rough year for us – I spent the first five months of it in Krakow, Poland studying abroad, and only a week and a half after I returned Chris moved to Los Angeles for a five month internship (I live in Indiana). Since Chris had to drive back to our hometown in May, we decided to road trip home together and try to see some national parks along the way. I flew out to LA on May 15, 2016, and that night Chris took me on a special dinner date. We had been apart so long, I thought Chris just wanted a nice date, and he didn’t make reservations until an hour before so I didn’t think it could be anything big.
We went to the Huntley Hotel in Santa Monica, which has a penthouse restaurant with a gorgeous view. We had a super nice dinner and laughed and talked. I was just so thrilled that we were finally reunited for more than a few days!
After dinner, Chris suggested we take some sunset photos on the beach. I have a nice camera with a self timer that we love to use. Standing in front of the Pacific Ocean and the mountains, Chris said he wanted to try a new pose for the camera, and then got down on one knee and proposed to me. I was so surprised but happy, and Chris said he forgot everything he was going to say. All I remember is that he told me loved me and wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. I immediately said yes!
Chris knows that I get anxious and can be introverted, yet he found a way to get a gorgeous picture of the most special moment of my life without a stranger being there! Chris and I had talked about picking out a ring together, because he was nervous, but he designed one by himself and guessed my ring size. It was simple and elegant, and fit perfectly! After I said yes, we were shaking and just kept hugging. I still have to pinch myself to believe it’s real! Marrying my best friend is all I could ever want. Four years of long distance has been exhausting, but it has all been worth it, and every day I feel as if I love him more. We talked for hours on the beach after he proposed, and the light slipped away as we clung to each second of that amazing day.
