Chelsey and Chad
How We Met
Chad and I first met while attending college in the fall of 2004, he was a senior and I was a freshman. I had gone to a few basketball games at the local college the previous year and had seen him playing; I thought he was so cute but didn’t get the chance to talk to him until I was actually a student at the college. We had some mutual friends and interacted a few times throughout the school year, but eventually went our separate ways come graduation time. We randomly saw each other twice over the next 8 years.
Fast forward through lots of life lessons to July 16, 2012; we both ended up living near Kansas City. We had become Facebook friends earlier in the month and Chad decided to reach out to me via FB message – we chatted for a while and then decided to meet up the following weekend with some mutual friends. We spent the entire evening talking to only each other and ended up hanging out every day that week. We went on our first official date on August 17th, 2012.

How He Asked
We had been together for almost 5 years when Chad proposed. About 5 months before he did so, he designed a ring and had it made in secret – the only other person who knew was his 7 (at the time) year old son, Jayden. In May 2017, my parents came for a visit and during that time, Chad asked for their permission to ask me to marry him.
We had planned a trip to Colorado to visit my family that summer, in July. While there, we went to Pingree Park, where there is no cell phone service, no internet, and no TV. We were enjoying being disconnected from the world for a short time! On the morning of July 16, 2017, Chad and Jayden woke me up around 7am – they wanted to go on an early morning walk. We got all bundled up and headed out. When we got to a clearing, surrounded by nothing but mountains, we spread out a blanket to sit in. That’s when Chad got on one knee.
He planned it perfectly so that he could propose 5 years, to the day, since we had reconnected with each other. Jayden had been able to keep the secret for months and my parents helped him hide the ring so I wouldn’t see it in our bag. It was such a perfect surprise!
