Chandler and Kelly

How We Met

Kelly and I met during my junior year and his senior year in college. He went to The University of South Carolina and I went to Columbia College, a college just down the street.  We met at a tailgate for a USC football game in the fall of 2014.  After about a month of talking and getting to know each other, we went on our first “real date.”  We got dressed up and went to a nice Italian restaurant downtown, because we both love pasta!

After dinner, we went for a walk and he showed me around USC.  He took me to a little rose garden that he knew of on campus, but when we got there, it was under construction and all of the roses were dead.  He was very upset, but I absolutely loved the amount of thought and effort that he put into our first date! So even though all of the roses were dead and he thought the night was ruined, when he asked me to be his girlfriend, I still said yes!

How He Asked

It was about a week before I moved to Orlando, Florida for an internship at Walt Disney World.  Kelly organized a going away dinner for me at my favorite restaurant, and invited all of my closest friends!  The whole time I was at dinner, I thought he was going to propose, but by the end of dinner, he hadn’t.  After dinner, some of my friends wanted to go back to their house, and the rest went home. Kelly said he had to go to the gas station and that he would meet us back at my best friend Maddy’s house.  I went with Maddy and my other best friend, Abbie, and in the car I said, “I really thought he was going to propose tonight.”  After a little while we got a text saying that Kelly and some of our other friends were in the theatre at my old school, Columbia College. So we drove there and walked into the theatre.

When I opened the door, all of my friends from dinner were on the stage with a sign that said “We’ll miss you!”  They even had the Friends Forever Graduation song playing over the sound system. I started crying and walked onto the stage to hug them, and then the music changed to “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran, which is me and Kelly’s song. I immediately knew what was happening and burst into tears as Kelly walked out of the wings holding a question mark.

When he got to me, he said “You know I love you a lot, right? So I got you this.” Then he got down on one knee and I said yes! There’s also a special tradition at my school where you throw newly engaged women into the fountain on campus, so after the proposal my school friends took me to the fountain and pushed me in! I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect proposal, and I’m so grateful to have a fiancé who put so much care and thought into involving the people who mean the most to me!
