Cassie and Brooks
How We Met
Brooks and I met in grade school. Actually, we were neighbors growing up – we lived 5 houses away from each other. We finally took advantage of our close proximity in the summer of 2009 and started spending time together. Brooks was about to begin his senior year of high school and I was off to start my freshman year of college. During that summer, I vividly remember the night before I left for college. Brooks and I stayed up all night talking. We also watched the sunrise and went to get breakfast before I packed up. But there’s one thing from that night we like to reminisce on most. When it got dark, we both found an old pair of shoes, ran outside, and threw them over the power lines that connected our houses. In that moment, we promised we would make long distance work…and we did.
How He Asked
Nearly 6 and a half years later, Brooks took me to Asheville for a long weekend trip with my sister and her boyfriend. We had a night time tour of the Biltmore Estate planned and I couldn’t wait, it’s gorgeous around the holidays! However, I had no idea what Brooks had planned before the tour. What I thought would be a Candlelight Christmas Tour at the Biltmore turned into the best day of my life.
Brooks – who never wants to take pictures – suggested that we walk over to the garden when we arrived to take pictures while the sun was setting. Even though it was cold and my heels were killing my feet, I agreed. If Brooks actually wanted to take pictures, of course I was on board. Standing at the edge of the gardens, overlooking the mountains and a beautiful sunset, Brooks told me he loved me and promised me forever and I promised him the same. I was still clueless as to what was about to happen – until Brooks reached into his pocket, looked at me, and said 7 words that made my heart drop: “I need to ask you a question…”
Brooks got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I have never been more surprised – I was so shocked my first reaction was “ARE YOU SERIOUS?!” Followed by, “YES! OF COURSE!” My sister ran up and gave me a huge hug – followed by Brooks’ cousin who was hiding in the garden taking these amazing pictures! We met our families later (another surprise!) and celebrated the rest of the weekend. It was perfect!
