Carrie and Nick
How WE Met
I have to admit that this is not the first time we met; we had met before and would meet again. But this is the beginning of our story.
I remember that exact date for a couple of reasons: it was the day after my birthday and it was the date of an event celebrating the end of our sophomore year in college.
At this event, I had gotten into a disagreement with a friend of mine and wandered off on my own to cool off. I went toward the refreshments table and saw Nick sitting alone, drinking coffee (I would quickly come to learn that this was not at all a strange behavior for him). He asked me if I wanted to sit with him.
I knew of Nick simply because we attended a very small college, however, we had never really spoken before this meeting. We talked for some time and I knew without hesitation that this person was going to be important to my story.
I got home from that event and told my roommate I’d found the man I was going to marry. She laughed, I laughed, we thought nothing of it.
We kept in touch after that day. Finals were fast approaching and we studied together fairly often. By the time the end of the school year came around, I had certainly developed something a bit stronger than a crush.
We parted ways for the summer — he left for Arkansas and I headed back to my hometown in north Florida. We kept in touch over the summer, talking almost daily, even keeping strange hours while Nick was on a vacation overseas.
We grew very close over those next few months, and Nick became one of my closest friends. But life rarely goes how we think it will and we were pulled apart for a quite some time. As hurt as I was that my crush on him had not panned out, I was even more upset at the loss of a good friend.
Nick and I both dated other people off and on. We were tense friends during that time, but we both knew in the backs of our minds that it was worth the trouble.
Then, in January 2016, when we both found ourselves single again, our friendship rekindled itself.
We both knew there was something pulling us together. A midnight text I sent on a whim turned into a three hour conversation that turned into more conversations in the following days.
Eventually we came to one conclusion: we owed it to ourselves to give it a real shot and see if this could be something.
On the night of January 25th, 2016, we were sitting at the picnic table right outside of my dorm when Nick told me quite plainly, “I think that we should date more seriously.” And I agreed.
We never looked back.
When that semester ended and graduation flashed by in a blur, we embarked on a new journey: long distance.
We initially thought it was temporary, just for the summer. It soon became clear that it was going to be a much-longer-than-anticipated arrangement. I flew to Arkansas five times that year, and saying goodbye got harder each time.
Finally, in July 2017, the wait was over.
How He Asked
Nick flew down to help me move. I packed everything I owned into a U-haul and we drove to Conway, AR in one day. The next six months of our relationship were the best so far. We made wonderful memories and grew closer to each other and to God.
We both became absolutely certain about one thing: this was our future.
On January 25th, 2018 (our two year dating anniversary), Nick asked me to be his wife. Nothing could ever have prepared me for that incredible, priceless moment.
I still think back to that day at the luncheon when I met Nick and how I was immediately drawn to him in some big way. I can’t believe that in just a few short months, I’ll be walking down the aisle toward him to begin our lives together as husband and wife!
What I learned from our journey is invaluable and each struggle has made me a stronger person. Nick and I have been through some impressive highs and some dark lows, but I am confident in our future together.
I have found the person that looks at my crazy and makes it feel normal. He believes in me and encourages me to be the best me I can be every single day. When he looks at me, I feel like I’m home.
What more could you ask for?
