Carolina and Alex
How We Met
I think I speak for both Alex and I when I say that we did not imagine that we would end up dating, nonetheless engaged! I worked with his aunt, Odalys, whom apparently saw potential in us both before we had even seen each other! It started off as a prank-call that Alex made to my extension at work, and slowly our conversations unraveled. We went from being mere acquaintances, to building a friendship that drew us closer than we could have ever dreamed of;when we met, Ihad baggage, as did he, and I think it is safe to say that we both gave each other the leap of faith we both neededto steer out of the dead ends we had come to with our past relationships. As our conversations grew with more substance, we got to know each other on a personal level and explored each other’s minds and depths unconsciously, effortlessly. After some time, our phone calls flourished into pizza, nights at Flanigan’s, hours of talking face to face and despite my attempt to “friend-zone” him, he somehow won me over. It wasn’t easy, it wasn’t quick, but it was our own version of friendship set on fire into a romance beyond our expectation…as I like to say, timing is everything
How He Asked
We had experienced good and bad times, we had stood by each other through the pretty and the ugly moments and faced struggles together, so when Alex got down on one knee right as we closed 2016 and started 2017, it couldn’t have been more perfect; it marked the beginning of a new chapter in our lives together. He had apparently consulted with my best friends, Priscilla and Karen, and he had asked for my father’s blessing prior to even purchasing the ring, which meant the world to me; every time I think of the fact that he was humble enough to ask for my father’s blessing, I get warm inside. It was December 31, 2016, and after having done rounds at my family’s house, sharing time with my grandmother, father, mother, and others, my mother, him and I returned to his mother’s house awaiting midnight. Priscilla and Karen arrived, along with so many other friends and family members and I figured it was just going to be a typical, festive New Year’s Eve… little did I know the surprise that was coming! As the countdown began, I started hustling to get everyone a glass of cider and a cup of grapes to welcome the new year and at exactly 12:00 AM, January 1, 2017, Alex got down on one knee, while playing “Die a Happy Man” by Thomas Rhett and asked me to marry him. I was speechless — in utter shock, frozen but of course, I said yes!
