Carleigh and Ricky
How We Met
Ricky and I met the summer before my senior year of high school. He had just graduated from high school. I remember it was the summer I was constantly over at my friend’s house, and one day she asked me if I wanted to go with her to Chick-fil-a to meet one of her friends.
I remember him hopping out of his ’84 Chevrolet wearing khakis and a polo shirt and thinking he is such a goober because it was the middle of July in Georgia, but I was definitely smitten. We began hanging out more and more that summer and the rest is pretty much history! We began officially dating in September and here we are almost 7 years later.
How He Asked
Well, Ricky had asked me if I wanted to go hiking in the next few weeks and take our new jeep on a small road trip. We decided on June 18th. That would’ve been his Grandma Betty’s birthday. She passed away in 2012, so I thought it would be a nice way to spend the day with Ricky. After looking at pictures we decided on going to Mount Cheaha in Alabama, little did I know I had just picked the place Ricky would be proposing. A few days before our trip, My cousin Ashleigh had texted me asking us to hang out, and Ricky mentioned that she and her husband should go with us on Monday, and they agreed. The morning of, I had a class downtown and on the way home my Cousin asked me what I was going to wear. Of course, if we were hiking, I was going to be wearing leggings and a T-shirt! In retrospect, I think it’s hilarious my cousin and Ricky had to talk me into looking cute. We ended up having dinner at the lodge at the Cheaha State Park, so they talked me into looking somewhat decent.
After dinner, right around the sunset, we began hiking the different trails around the park. I had a feeling that something was going to happen and this might be the night, but after having that feeling before in the last 7 years together, I quickly brushed it off and tried enjoying the scenery. We walked down the first trail that led to Bald Rock and stood there taking it in. I thought surely this would be it, but instead, we began walking back to the car. I won’t lie, I was a bit disappointed. Ricky then drove us to the second trail that we began to hike that leads to the huge rock ledge that comes up when you google Mount Cheaha. Once we got there the sun was setting and the view was just breath-taking. Ricky convinced me to climb out the rock ledge with him. My cousin and her husband stayed back to take a picture of us on the rock.
So, I’m standing out on this huge rock and Ricky is just standing behind me and I’m like “what are you doing..?”. I should also probably mention that even though Ricky is a firefighter he is afraid of heights. He finally walks up to me and is just staring at me for what felt like forever and I ask him “So, are you ready to go back now..?”. He then asks me “knock knock”?. Okay Ricky, “who’s there”?, Then he says “Marry”.
At that point I know what’s going on so, I mess with him and finally he gets me to say “Marry who?”. and then he gets down on one knee with the most beautiful ring I have ever seen. Of course, I said yes! After when we were celebrating I kept seeing the same butterfly flying around, I knew it had to be his Grandma Betty giving us her approval. It’s definitely a day I will never forget!
