Cameron and Rachel

How We Met

Cameron and I went to middle and high school together. During our freshman year, we were boyfriend and girlfriend for about five months. We were actually each other’s first kiss. However, we went our separate ways after freshman year. A year after graduation, I saw Cameron at Zaxby’s and he came running to me and picked me up. He told me he was going to take me out on a proper date. And the rest, as they say, is history.

How He Asked

We went on a trip to Alaska to visit my father for Thanksgiving. All week we were searching for the northern lights but the conditions just weren’t right for about four straight nights. One night, we saw a green haze that gave us some hope. On the night before Thanksgiving, one of my best friends, Jackie, texted me to tell me her mother was gone after a hard fight with ovarian cancer. Upset and heartbroken, I went upstairs to tell Cameron. As I was telling him, I looked out the window and saw what looked like dazzling blue clouds. I ran to my sister’s room and made sure I wasn’t seeing things. She said “that’s the lights!” And we ran. All I could say was “it’s Jackie’s mom!” We jumped in the truck and went straight to the big field on base. And wouldn’t you know, a random woman was there with a fancy camera. She said “do you want a picture?” And we proceeded to have a Northern Lights photo shoot in five degree weather. Finally, Cameron said he wants another picture. He said, “Well babe, I guess now is a good time to ask……will you marry me?” It was dark and all I could see were the green lights in the sky. With tears streaming down my face, I said yes. Thankfully, Jackie’s mother was present and watching over us and it was a whirlwind of a night. We will never forget that special night.
