How We Met

We met at a high school graduation party in 2010. We lived in different towns and went to different high schools but had the same mutual friend. I was the oddball at the graduation party because I didn’t go to the high school that everyone was from, so my sister came with me. We only knew my friend’s family that was there, so we sat down outside near the food and just chatted with each other. Later in the night, Nick came up to my sister and I and asked if he could sit next to us. (Photo attached. I still love that we have a photo of the exact place where we met.) He pulled up a chair, grabbed a cupcake off of the table behind us and asked me if I wanted it. I told him no thank you… and that was the beginning of a long night of laughing and conversations about private jets we pretended we owned and cars we pretended we had. He was goofy, made me laugh, and made the conversation so comfortable. We ended up exchanging phone numbers, setting up a Chili’s dinner and movie date a week or two later, and later becoming boyfriend and girlfriend. Here we are 8 years later.

How He Asked

Sunday, June 3, 2018, the day after one of my best friend’s wedding and the day before my birthday. Nick told me he was going with his dad to look at a snowblower he found on Craigslist. Yes, a snowblower in June. I honestly didn’t think anything of it. I just thought his dad found a good off-season deal. Nick left around 9 in the morning on Sunday, and didn’t come back until about 1 in the afternoon. I stayed home in my pajamas and did laundry, vacuumed, and all those other fun house chores a first time home buyer is getting used to. When he got home, he mowed the lawn and I finished my chores inside. My mom texted me and told me she was going to stop by to drop off a pot of flowers she got for our backyard. Again, nothing out of the ordinary. Shortly after, Nick’s brother came in unannounced dressed in his army uniform after drill. He randomly comes over so I didn’t think anything of it.

His brother told me that the kitchen smelled, so asked if we could go outside. I said, “what the heck, Shaun, I just lit a candle!” We went on the deck and he was telling me about drill and his weekend. Nick walked through the yard, said something to Shaun and said let’s go to the front yard. Again, nothing out of the ordinary. We walked around the house and I saw my mom’s car, so I said “oh, mom’s here!” I then noticed my sister, her wife, her son, and Nick’s dad were in the driveway. They all yelled, “HI!” I was surprised but thought they must have been surprising me for my birthday (that was the following day).

We all hugged and talked, and Nick walked over to my Mom’s car. He walks towards me holding a golden retriever puppy. I immediately started bawling. I was so confused and didn’t know what was going on. My mom started taking pictures and Nick handed this adorable little puppy to me. I grew up with a golden retriever that passed away in 2016 at the age of 14. Everyone was crying. Shortly after, Nick told me to look at her collar. It said “XOXO” on it, and when I flipped it over, it said “WILL YOU MARRY ME?” I look up and Nick is down on one knee. I’m still crying of happiness.
