John and Michelle's Brooklyn Promenade Proposal
How we met: John & I had met in 2001 in our high school chorus class; a mutual friend at the time had introduced us. He thought I was cute & I didn’t know who he was just yet. We ended up dating very briefly as John was extremely shy & quiet back then, while I most certainly was not! From then on we continued to date other people while attempting to remain friends the best we could. We argued a lot & always blamed it on one of us annoying the other, when in reality, we were frustrated not being together.
Fast forward to me transferring to college in Manhattan, 2007. We dated again & split just before I left, he said that he couldn’t handle having a long distance relationship & truthfully, I wanted to explore NYC on my own.
Going our separate ways, we were brought together again by the wonderful world of Facebook! Checking in on one another lives, etc.
Then one day I received a message that I thought I would never receive – “I’m in love with you & always have been, you’re the one I want to be with for the rest of my life.” (We hadn’t seen each other in person since I left in 2007 . . . and this was March 2013, so you can imagine the shock.)
We talked A LOT, he asked to take me out, so we went and now the rest is history. We are finally together & it’s a happiness that I will never be able to explain. We both always say how our lives used to feel as if something were missing & finally that feeling is gone.
How he asked: Being that we have this amazing history together it was going to be very hard for John to surprise me.
We had gone ring shopping so I knew it was in the works it was just a matter of when. Because we know one another so well I could sense the proposal coming closer each day. I would be lying though if I said he didn’t have me totally guessing day in and day out, it drove me crazy!
Finally the day came, I knew it was going to happen & was so nervous, excited, & anxious! He was being so weird that day & timing out everything we had to do, on top of cleaning his sneakers, getting a hair cut for no reason and ironing his clothes!
We get to the promenade in Brooklyn and he starts shaking, it was so adorable. I felt like we were taking that walk again before we kissed the first time 13 years ago.
He tried to tell me how much he loved me & got too choked up, so just got right down on one knee asking for me to marry him with the most beautiful ring. I love him so much & most certainly said YES!
What we have seems like the story written out of a book or one you would watch in a movie, and each day that goes by we always say, “I can’t believe we are finally here.” This feels like a dream come true to both of us & we are just beyond thrilled to be together, side-by-side, forever.
