Brooke and Billy
How We Met
Billy & I saw each other for the first time over three years ago. I was visiting South Carolina one summer and we passed each other in a church hallway. We didn’t speak, but we both remember passing each other in that hallway. Who knew that a year later I would move to SC from California & our paths would cross again. I was moving out of an apartment & Billy came over to help out. He asked me out on a date, but after just moving across the country I was not quite ready for a relationship. I eventually came to my senses a few months later & it was the best decision I have ever made. He was my first friend here in South Carolina and now he will be my best friend for life. P.S. He told me he loved me for the first time at that same church we first laid eyes on each other at!
How He Asked
I am currently in my student teaching semester. My school has a “Real Men Read” program, inviting men from the community into our school to read books to the students. My clinical teacher asked if my boyfriend Billy would come in & read to our class. She mentioned the Principal wanted pictures/videos to put on the school website to promote the program. Of course, Billy said yes & he came Friday morning to read “How I Became a Pirate” by local author Melinda Long.
After reading the book we took the kids on a treasure hunt. I took pictures and videos throughout the entire lesson so excited that my sweet man was going to be on the school website! The first treasure box had colored pieces of paper & a clue to return back to the classroom. The next treasure box clue stated, “If you want to see the treasure inside, first stand with the letters side by side.” The letters were going to read “REAL MEN READ BOOKS.”
We counted down & the letters instead were turned over, reading “BROOKE WILL YOU MARRY ME” & Billy got down on one knee. Little did I know Billy had been secretly planning this proposal with my teacher for over a month. Real Men Read is a program at the school, but that is not the reason Billy was there that morning. I am the luckiest girl in the world.
