Brittney and Shane
When Shane asked me to go hiking that warm sunny Saturday in August, I didn’t think much of it. My sister had been visiting from out of town and we are avid hikers, so having been to Ridley Creek several times (it’s one of our favorite spots!) I figured we would just do a nice, brisk walk through to show my sister some of the more scenic parts of Delaware County. Little did I know, this particular hiking trip was about much more than that. We walked about a half mile down the trail before arriving at our usual stopping point: a small bridge covering the steady flow of the creek. Though I typically would have liked to stop here, I insisted on continuing on the path rather than taking a break because my stamina was exceptionally high that day.
It might have taken Shane and my sister three or four times of asking me to stop and take a break before I finally agreed! As I waited for Shane to take the water out of his backpack, I sat on the edge of the bridge with my feet dangling over the side. I hear him make a comment about how beautiful the scenery was, and I see my sister take her phone out which I assumed was for Instagram purposes (it was a nice view, after all!).
Out of the corner of my eye I see movement, and before I knew it, Shane was down on one knee, ring in hand, asking me to be his wife. After I tearfully said yes, I was confronted with yet ANOTHER surprise! Throughout the entirety of our relationship (about a year and a half), Shane had been collecting memorabilia from our various dates, trips, and outings, and putting them together in a collective scrapbook to present to me at our eventual engagement. This book contained everything from photos of us, tickets from trips we’ve been on and concerts we’ve gone to, notes that he’s left in my lunches, bible verses, and notes from the first graders that I teach saying how much they love me. It was then that I truly understood the depth of love that this man held for me, and I am beyond excited to spend the rest of my life as his wife.
