Brittany and Leigh

How We Met

I first heard about Leigh when in search for a boxer puppy, from a friend who previously bought one from his family. I Facebook messaged him on March 17, 2013 in hopes that his family still bred boxers and had available puppies. Unfortunately, no puppies would be born for a while so I decided to go with another breeder. After seeing I got a female boxer Leigh reached out to me again. We ended up building a relationship around our love for boxers. Facebook messages turned into text messages, which turned to phone calls. Hours turned into days, which turned into over a year of talking every single day. I never thought it was possible to develop feelings for someone you never met in person so when the distance came between us, Leigh started to date someone and asked me not to talk to him anymore unless it was dog related.

When I didn’t get to talk to him everyday I started to realize that I made a mistake and that my feelings for him were way more than I expected. In July of 2014 I decided it was time to meet Leigh and drove an hour and half to him. I was so nervous and filled with butterflies, but knew it was going to be the best decision I had ever made. After our first meeting we met up a few other times before we realized that we were made for each other, but we weren’t the only ones falling in love. In October 2014 we started dating and also found out my female boxer (Kota) was pregnant with his male boxer’s (Stout) puppies. In December we quickly became a family of 12. Leigh, me, Kota, Stout and 8 boxer puppies!!!

Brittany and Leigh's Engagement in Long Beach Island

How He Asked

On January 17, 2016 Leigh and I moved in together. Us and our three boxers (we obviously had to keep at least one of the puppies). Soon after moving in together Leigh got a new job and I started nursing school. Our time together was very limited and it got extremely hard sometimes. He worked night shifts and I was either at class, at work or studying. Our best way of communicating was writing each other notes day in and day out on our dry erase board. It started becoming our little tradition. Something I looked forward to every day. Whether the notes made me smile and laugh because he truly is the best thing that has ever happened to me or made me cry because I missed him so much I cherished them so much.

Little did I know these notes had so much more meaning to them. On July 9, 2017 my whole world changed. It was about 6 pm and we were sitting on the beach with some of Leigh’s family. He simply got up from his beach chair and told me that he got me a bathing suit cover up and he wanted me to try it on to see if it fit. Confused by his sweet gesture at such a random time I agreed. He then told me he got me something else and handed me a little black book that simply said Dear Brittany in red cursive on the front. As I opened it I realized it was pictures of our notes. Every single note we had written each other for a year and a half.

Where to Propose in Long Beach Island

As I turned the page I noticed the notes started to look a little different. He had written “will you marry me” on all of them, took the picture and then erased it. On the third page it stated “OK drop the book so I can ask you in person now.” Leigh then got on one knee and asked me to marry him!! The shock level was through the roof, but obviously I said YES!!! I cannot wait to marry the only man that was made for me!!! After all of the excitement I went back to actually look at my book. Little did I know Leigh was taking pictures of our notes on his phone for a year and half and then personally made my book. I absolutely could not believe it.
