Brittany and Joseph
How We Met
One day during the spring semester of my sophomore year of college just as microeconomics class was about to start, my friend JP introduced us to one of his friends from high school, Joe, and invited him to sit with us. From that day on, my wardrobe for class changed drastically. I found myself looking nicer and nicer for class each day to impress this new friend of ours. My mom always told me, “Always look nice for class, you never know when you’ll find a nice boy.” As always, mom was right.
As the semester went on there were several study sessions Joe and I both took part in with friends. Fast forward to fall semester, Joe and I both found ourselves having to take macroeconomics class only this time it was just the two of us. Study sessions turned into study “dates.” We were hanging out and socializing more and more. A year after meeting him, we finally started dating. In April of 2012, he asked me to be his girlfriend. It wasn’t long after that I realized he would be the last boyfriend I’d ever have.
How He Asked
Every year, the law office where his mom works hosts a firm weekend retreat at a local beach club. The retreat concludes with a breakfast Sunday morning and families are invited to join. This was the first year we were able to attend as a couple since we were away at college. I made sure to dress up to make a good impression. After we finished breakfast, Joe asked me to go for a walk on the beach. I hesitated, wondering why he didn’t ask anyone else to join, but he insisted they would meet us down there.
As we walked further down the beach, I saw a giant heart made of red roses in the sand. I immediately stopped in my tracks asking him what is for. He quickly answered, “Don’t worry about it.” He led me closer to them and eventually we stood in the middle of the heart. At that moment, I finally put together what was going on. The man of my dreams got down on one knee and asked me to marry him, I couldn’t say “yes” fast enough!
After I gathered myself, I looked over and saw my family who I thought was in North Carolina there to surprise me. He made sure my mom, dad, and sister were there. He then proceeded to tell me that he had a beachside cottage for us for the night and had already called my boss and arranged for me to take the following day off work. Joined by our families we spent the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying and all went out to dinner that night. I am the hardest person to surprise and I was totally in a state of shock. There are no words to describe the overwhelming feeling of love and happiness I felt that day and continue to feel knowing I get to spend the rest of my life with such a wonderful man.
