Brina and Rafael | Engaged in Thailand
How We Met: Rafa and Brina met in Madrid in November of 2010 shortly after Brina moved there to become an English teacher. They exchanged numbers at a mutual friend’s birthday party to arrange for an “Inter-Cambio” or language exchange. Brina was going to give Rafa English courses in return for Spanish lessons. Instead, Rafa invited her to a concert (turns out he spoke perfect English). The following weekend they decided to take a road-trip to the north of Spain to Bilbao and San Sebastián. After 3 short days they fell in love and have been together ever since.
The months following were quite hectic as Brina experienced problems with her travel visa and Rafa was scheduled to move to Mexico. After being denied access to the country, Brina got on a place back to the states convinced she would never see Rafa again. Thanks to Rafa’s friends’ advice, he quickly booked a flight to Denver and two weeks later the split decision was made to move to Mexico City together. This is where they lived for several months in a lovely little apartment in La Condesa, D.F.
Rafa and Brina spent the years leading up to the engagement traveling and living abroad between Mexico, South America, Spain and the States. They now live happily in Denver, CO where Brina works for a digital ad agency and Rafa continues his career in event ticketing.
How He Asked:In August of 2013, the couple booked a trip to Thailand, Cambodia and Singapore. Rafa left for a work trip prior to the vacation to Australia and Asia. While in Sydney, he made his decision to propose and began looking for rings. When Brina arrived in Bangkok she was clueless to the fact that there was a diamond ring his Rafa’s pocket the entire time.
After traveling through Cambodia they finally made it to Bophut Beach in Koh Samui, an island off the coast of Thailand. On the island was a beautiful hotel called the Hansar Resort, this is where Rafa planned an intimate dinner on the beach. The romantic evening started off quite calm as they sipped mojitos at the bar and listened to the waves….
Shortly after sitting down for dinner fireworks started going off above the table and bright words lit up on the edge of the beach reading, “Marry Me?” in sparklers.
After the initial shock had passed, Brina said yes of course. The couple then made a wish and lit a traditional Thai lantern to commemorate their engagement and released it over the ocean.
Rafa had hired an amazing proposal planner and a talented photographer to capture the perfect moment. Afterwards, they spent the rest of the trip engaged off the coast of Phuket, Thailand.
