How We Met

Three years ago now, there was a charity campaign run by Jared Padalecki to benefit To Write Love on Her Arms, which inspired the creation of a Facebook group to support those with mental health issues. It was in this group that we somehow bumped into each other–two people from two very different countries! I took a brave leap and reached out to him; we quickly became friends, and immediately knew that we would be more than that. We spoke every day and after a month or so began Skyping once a week or more, each dreaming of when we would finally meet in person. After about eight months of being together online and talking every single day, he had saved up enough money to fly to the U.S. and surprise me for Christmas! He arrived alone in a foreign country with no plan and not knowing anyone after delayed flights and being awake for thirty six hours. He sought the help of my family and surprised me at work one night. Since then, we have taken turns flying to visit each other for a few weeks every few months, and begun working on a plan for us to live together more permanently. Cumulatively, we have spent about nine months of our three years together in person, living together during visits.

How He Asked

At last, during our most recent visit, this time in his home of England, he took me to London for a day out. We had been to London many times, but he had a special day planned. Naturally, it was raining, there were train cancellations, and pretty much everything that could go wrong did… But somehow, the way we were able to overcome that together (as always) made it all the more special! At the end of the day, we arrived at Buckingham Palace, where he insisted we had to go and stand underneath the fountain. When we got there, he laid down our umbrella and started stammering out a little speech he had prepared, before finally he got down on one knee in front of, as he said, “God, the Queen, and everybody.” Of course I said yes! I barely even saw the ring before he was nervously sliding it onto my finger. Now, as he prepares to move in with me, I am his new “queen” and this is his new country. To me, his leaps of faith in this relationship could not be more romantic, and we look forward to a life full of that together.
