Briana and Darryl
How We Met – her side
It was our first semester at Brigham Young University over two years ago. We were just assigned to be in a group project together. For those of you who don’t know me, I have a deep disdain towards shared school work. As a result, I had no desire to get to know anyone in my group. Even in light of Darryl’s kindness and natural excitement for life, Darryl recalls that “I could not be bothered.” So much so, that in response to his offer to carry my books to class one day I rolled my eyes and walked away.
I know. So rude. But in my defense, I just spent the last hour rewriting one of his responses for the project and “logically,” I thought, “if you have time to carry my books you have time to proof-read your work.”
Little did I know that a year and a half later the boy to whom I so rudely said “no” to, would be the man to steal my eternal “yes.”
How He Asked – his side
It was the middle of February and I had been trying to put an event together for Black History Month. Briana and I both appreciate a well put together event but we enjoy putting one together even better. At the same time, I also wanted to propose to her before the month was over. (Lord knows she was ready for that rock.)
Knowing Briana, though, the proposal had to be unique, over the top and with purpose. Just like her. So, I called a few friends and gathered my resources to figure out how to pull off the most poppin’ proposal. We came up with a lot of potential possibilities but in the end, I decided to combine both ideas and throw a Black History Month Charity event and propose to her there. Briana is really hard to surprise so I figured that if we held a party that was publicly advertised as something that had nothing to do with her, we would completely catch her off guard.
The whole thing was put together in less than two weeks. We held it at a location that Briana had previously mentioned was “one of the coolest places in town” and lined up performances by local up and coming musicians who were set to perform tributes to the greats. Briana also has over 13 years of vocal training behind her so naturally, we made sure to get my girl up on that stage too. After all, she may not have known it at the time but this night was really all about her.
She had just finished her performance and was about to introduce the next act. I stepped in before she could get started though and I swiped the mic out of her hands. Our song “Only Wanna Be With You” by Samm Henshaw started to play. Overwhelmed by my nerves and the power of the spirit I started my proposal speech. She turned to look at her friends and I quickly heard a voice in my head say “You better get on your knees. It’s time, boy!” So as soon as she turned back towards me I got on one knee and proposed. The rest is history.
