Briana and Philip

How We Met

Phil and I actually met at a local sports bar by our houses on September 21, 2013. The funny part about this is that neither Phil nor I drink. I was not super excited to go and was perfectly fine with telling my friends to go on without me and have fun, but they wouldn’t hear of it. Phil on the other hand, didn’t even directly know my friend who’s birthday it was, but was a friend of another girl’s boyfriend who needed some company that night. Phil “claims” that from the moment he walked in I couldn’t keep my eyes off of him, but in actuality the second he walked through the door he made a beeline for me, held out his hand and said “Hi, I’m Phil”. A typical he said/she said story, but after that we spent almost every day together and two weeks later he asked me to be his girlfriend.

How He Asked

I had been saying that I wanted to see the Observation Deck at the World Trade Center since it had opened that past spring. We could never find the time to go, but my birthday was coming up on July 6th. Phil said we would go on the 2nd as an early birthday present to me being that 4t of July weekend is very busy in his line of work and he wouldn’t be able to take off.

We left early in the morning for the ferry and I noticed he was having difficulty staying still and kept getting up to walk around, but I didn’t think anything of it. When we finally arrived at the Trade Center, I noticed a man carrying a whole bunch of camera equipment and I joked to Phil that he must really like the view from up top. Inside there was a row of metal detectors. As I got on one line Phil got on another, but again I didn’t think anything of it because this was something we had done in the past to save time at airports and sporting events. Once upstairs I saw that in the center of the room there was a platform with what looked to be a hologram of the city below it. I walked over and was looking at it when I heard Phil say my name. When I turned around there he was on one knee and he asked me if I would marry him. As it turns out, the man carrying all the camera equipment was a friend of Phil’s from work who was a part time photographer. Phil had recruited him to take pictures of the big moment! I have to say I am one of the few people who was congratulated in so many different languages because all of the people standing around us were from all over the world. It was an amazing experience.
