Breigh and Austin
How We Met
Austin and I met on Christian Mingle on October 29, 2016. I had been on the site for 6 months when I came across his profile. I was wondering where this guy came from! It seemed like everything he wrote on his profile was exactly what I was looking for. He wrote about his relationship with God and how his favorite Bible verse was in 1 Corinthians 13. That’s when I stopped. My favorite Bible verse was also within 1 Corinthians 13! And as cheesy as this may sound, I knew I had to reach out to him at that point. Out of all the profiles I had seen, no guy had shared the same favorite Bible verse as I did. That had to mean something, right?!
After I sent him a message, it took him less than a day to respond with a pretty eager message! He said he loved my profile, too, and would love to have the chance to get to know me better.
That’s when our friendship began. I found out that he was really funny, man of God who had a kind-hearted soul. And for some reason, he thought my jokes were funny, too! He became everything I had hoped God had planned for me in my future husband. And the thing that I have respected most about him is how he shares his thoughts and feelings with me that has created an incredible intimacy between us.
How He Asked
On July 29, 2017, Austin and I took a trip to wine country in Fredericksburg, Texas. Fredericksburg is one of our jewels of the Hill Country, rolling grass hills, a rich, German heritage, and the best selection of wine the state of Texas has to offer. We spent the first part of that Saturday walking the downtown district and had lunch at the Rathskeller restaurant. Afterwards, we drove to Wildseed Farm, known for their beautiful wildflower fields and Wedding Oak Winery which is nestled inside. Having never been to the winery, we had to try their wine first hand! I remember I chose the Bridal Blush wine, an amazingly crisp blush wine that I’ll never forget! After we were served our wine, we made our way to the butterfly gardens.
I have respected Austin the most for how he is so quick to share his thoughts and feelings with me that has created an incredible intimacy between us. As we walked through the butterfly garden, he reminded me of that again. He acknowledged that he had made some mistakes in his life, as we all do. And he had resigned himself to never meeting anyone worth while because he felt that God would not find him deserving. But after he met me, he said, he couldn’t believe God blessed him with an opportunity to be with such an incredible woman of God. Austin went on to talk about some of our greatest memories together and spoke about all of the things that he loved about me. As we made our way to the wildflower fields on the outskirts of the property, I started to become hopeful he was proposing, but I didn’t want to get my hopes up! I knew he had the engagement ring for a while, but I had no idea when he would propose or what he was planning! Instead, I just tried to take in the moment and resign myself to whatever happened, it would be a great day sharing the love I have for my best friend. As we kept walking, I returned my sentiments as well. God truly did bless me with Austin, and he has been everything I have been waiting for in a future husband and even more.
As we walked the pathway by the beautiful wildflower field, he stopped and turned towards me, holding both of my hands. He said that he had decided a long time ago that I was the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. As he got down on one knee and pulled out the ring that I had loved most when we went ring shopping, he asked “Breigh Gray, will you marry me?” Joyful tears came streaming down my face as I said “Yes!” Austin removed the promise ring he had given me on Valentine’s Day that year and replaced it with the most gorgeous ring I had ever seen. Being quite a bit of a romantic himself, Austin picked me up and spun me around as we both smiled and laughed together. It was the most cliche thing we had ever done, but we loved every second of it! He was my best friend and now he is going to be my best friend for life.
On our way home, we stopped at Fat Ass Winery to grab some of their specialty mixed wine to celebrate. They announced our engagement as we went through the wine tasting and everyone on the packed tasting floor let out a huge cheer! Having complete strangers also celebrate in the fun made it even that much more of an incredible, fun day!
When we got home, my family was waiting for us already knowing what had happened! Apparently, Austin planned ahead of time that the family would be ready to celebrate with an amazing dinner, paired with the wines brought home from our excursion that day. This small act of love that Austin did for me meant so much since I’m so close with my family. We ended the day drinking wine and celebrating with the most important people in my life.
The day was perfect and it’s been my favorite day since then. But I can’t wait until our wedding day on May 19, 2018, challenges that title.
