Blair and Nathan

How We Met: Nathan and I both were delegates for our schools to the Alabama Youth Leadership Conference held at Auburn University Montgomery during a weekend in June of 2006. We were both a little hesitant to go being the only juniors from our schools to be going. We caught each other’s eye outside in a group exercise where I made a complete fool of myself. When we were divided into smaller groups, Nathan and I happened to be together and we hit it off instantly. He had me hysterically laughing all weekend and it was heartbreaking when the weekend ended and we had to go our separate ways.

Not having enough of my time with Nathan, I frantically planned a birthday party for myself in order to see him again. It was over a month after my birthday when our parents could finally get us together since we lived over an hour apart. We saw a terrible movie in an empty theater and he finally asked me to be his girlfriend.

How He Asked: Almost five and a half years later, Nathan told me he wanted to take me to Callaway Gardens during our fall break to help us relax from the stressful semester at UAB. We have been to every botanical garden in the Birmingham area and I had mentioned that I wanted to go to Callaway so I thought he was just being sweet and thoughtful.

After the two and a half hour’s drive, getting lost in the park and sitting through a huge rainstorm, we finally made our way to the Ida Cason Callaway Memorial Chapel, which I was desperate to see. I was so busy taking pictures that I didn’t realize how anxious he was until we were standing on the altar and he grabbed my hand and said, “I’ve waited five years for this and I can’t wait any longer.” I immediately started sobbing and couldn’t understand most of the rest of what he said but managed to get out a yes. Afterward he showed me where he had it all written out in his phone and told to me how he had gotten it all together over the last few months. This is incredible in itself since we spend most of our time together or on the phone with each other!

The wedding date: We will be getting married in May of 2013.
