Ben and Mari's Beautiful Annapolis Marriage Proposal

How we met: We first met about a year ago at her cousin’s wedding in Texas (I live in Texas and she in Delaware). Although that is when we met, it is not when we found a connection. At the time of the wedding, we were both dating other people, so there was no interest on either of our parts. In fact, it was basically just an introduction by her aunt, who also lives in Texas and I have known for seven years (in fact, Mari’s cousin is my daughter’s godmother).

So jump forward 7 months to March and Mari’s cousin posted a photo from the wedding on Facebook of herself and Mari. I liked the photo and that drew Mari to my Facebook page. She then started asking her family in Texas who I was and things about me. After about a month of “Facebook stalking” me and asking her family about me she got the courage up to send me a message on Facebook and friend request me.

When I opened up her Facebook page and her pics I immediately pictured us meeting at the wedding and said to myself “no way!!” She is the last person on earth I would have ever expected a friend request from on Facebook, much less be interested in me. So we started messaging back and forth on Facebook which led to texting then calling each other. We stayed on the phone for 3 to 6 hours at a time at night, which started the spark.

Two weeks after we started talking, I booked a plane ticket to Baltimore to see her in person and see if what we had over the phone was a real thing. She picked me up from the airport in Baltimore (about 3 hours from her house) then she took me to Annapolis to eat before we headed back. We ate at a little Mexican restaurant there and also had the chance to go into St. Anne’s church and say a quiet prayer together.

It was the most amazing weekend of my life. I stayed from Friday to Sunday evening and there was not one awkward moment from the time we first embraced in person to the time we were both crying as I walked to get back on the plane back to Houston. We met face-to-face on April 11, and our relationship has only grown from then. In fact, I was pretty sure I would marry her after that weekend.

How he asked: So I had two choices as far as where I would propose after I had the ring- the Baltimore airport or outside of St. Anne’s church in Annapolis. The church is actually where we took our first picture together. After a lot of consideration, I thought I had picked the church.

I knew that I wanted it to be captured in pictures without her knowing so we could capture her true expression in a moment that neither of us will ever forget. I called Mike B. Photography about 3 weeks beforehand. I told him of my plan and he was helpful and more than willing to help me out. About two days before I asked Mike to also take some photographs at the airport since that location was my second choice.

So the day of the proposal, I came in around 11:15 and she met me in baggage claim where she always gets me. I tell her I’m hungry and want to go to Annapolis to eat. She was hungry too so she agreed. This whole time I’m texting Mike as to how far we are away. We finally parked and the original plan that I discussed with mike was that I would take her into the church and then come back out and ask her close to the front steps.

Well, as we were walking up to the church I noticed they were having a funeral that day and there were black cars parked in front of it so that plan went downhill quickly. I then started looking around for spots I could do it and looked across the street at a purple flower outside of a building and told myself that’s the spot.

By this time, she kind of knew something was up because I was acting a little weird. So I lead her to the spot, turn her around and drop down to one knee. It could not have been any better and to have it captured by camera is something I won’t ever forget. The photographs tell the rest of the story.
