Barbara and Byron

How We Met

In 2008, Byron and I met in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina during Memorial Day weekend. We had no idea that we would be engaged 8 years later or even that we would stay in touch with one another. Each year thereafter, him and his friends would invite me and my cousins on various trips. They would always say, “just get here and we will make sure you all are taken care of.” Each year, we we met them in whatever city they would invite us to. Around New Years of 2015, I decided to visit him in his hometown. Unexpectedly, we realized that we liked each other more than we thought and decided we would be together. Almost a year and a half later, he proposed!

How He Asked

On Friday, May 13, 2016, I graduated from law school and had reservations at the Yardhouse in North Hills of Raleigh, North Carolina. Most of my family had traveled several hours to attend my graduation and dinner, so we headed there immediately following commencement. Throughout the dinner, my fiance’ was very quiet. I did not know why, but thought he was just tired. Towards the end of the dinner, I got up to go wash my hands and to thank my family members (and some of his) for coming to support me on my accomplishment. My fiance’ decided to make a toast at that time and, knowing him, I thought he was just trying to be over the top as usual. As he wrapped up the toast, I looked away oblivious to what was about to happen. Everyone started hollering, but I had no idea why. I turned back around towards my fiance’ only to see him on one knee. I immediately passed out. My fiance’s father caught me (thankfully, before I dropped to the floor). When I finally opened my eyes back up and realized what was happening, I began crying hysterically (the ugly cry). Proposing to me on what I thought was the biggest day of my life thus far (graduation from law school) soon became the most greatest life-changing day ever!
