Avery and Zach
How We Met
We met at Elon University. We were both planning to study abroad over the school’s winter mini-semester and were headed to the Cayman Islands. Neither of us was looking to meet anyone at the time, but I remember eyeing him and being curious what he was all about. After the trip ended, so did both of our previous relationships. A few months later he messaged me on Facebook and asked for my number. For our first date he showed up at my apartment with a copy of Silence of the Lambs (a big risk but it paid off since I love scary thrillers) and things took off from there. He asked me to be his girlfriend a few weeks later down at his parents’ beach house and – though we realize I never official said ‘yes’ to that question – we’ve been together ever since. Six years together, many of which were long distance, four cities, and one more year of law school left, we can’t wait to finally be in the same city in a few months!
How He Asked
Zach had been hinting for a while that he was ready to propose. We’d been to look at rings, I knew he’d talked to my dad, and I was (I’m)patiently waiting for him to ask! He made a big show about taking me to dinner for my birthday, booked a restaurant I’ve been dying to go to with him and was acting weirdly nervous. Of course – I was ready. I agonized over my outfit, got my nails done, the whole deal. So as dinner came and went, then drinks, then the ride home, I was so disappointed he didn’t ask! Little did I know his nerves were because the ring wasn’t ready in time and he knew how bummed I’d be! Two weeks later I finished my summer clerkship and we were headed to the beach for vacation. Again, he made dinner plans, I got dressed up, and we headed into Beaufort – to the place was always go when we’re down there.
Yet again, dinner came and went, a sunset walk along the pier, and the drive home. I was ready to be disappointed again, certain it wasn’t going to happen that night, so as soon as we got home I headed to put pjs on. As I came out of the bedroom, he had two glasses of wine in his hand and asked me to go on a walk down to the end of the dock. We got to the end and as we held hands he told me how much he loved me, how he’d always known he wanted to marry me (it’s true – he told me a few weeks into dating!) and got down on one knee! Of course, I said yes!
