Emily and Austin

Where to Propose in Germany

How We Met

Austin and I met when we signed up to spend a summer abroad teaching English in Malaysia. We went to separate islands but met in the orientation period. We exchanged emails and wrote to each other that whole summer (we didn’t have other modern technology). After that summer, we went back to our separate colleges and began talking over the phone. Our first date was in New York City while we were both visiting family. From then on Austin and I knew that the challenges of a long distance relationship would be more than worth it. Two and a half years later we are engaged and finally living in the same city, ready to live happily ever after.

How He Asked

Austin and I planned a trip to Europe thinking of only a vacation and a fun time of adventure. Little did I know his true intentions. Only our second day in Munich, Germany, we were part of a tour that would take us to the most photographed and visited castle in the world, Neuschwanstein. On our tour I noticed that he was eager to befriend two other Americans and I did not know why. We traveled up the mountain to the famous “Marianne Bridge”, where it is said to have the best view of the castle, but that wasn’t enough for Austin. He insisted that our small group make a steep hike up the surrounding mountain to “get a better view”. While on the hike up little did I know that he had informed the other travelers that he would be proposing with the view of the castle behind us.

Once we arrived at the top, I noticed cameras pointing in my direction. That is when he knelt down on one knee and asked me to marry him!
