Austin and Anya
How We Met
Austin and I met originally in 2008 when we were in the 7th grade. We hadn’t really talked much until freshman year of high school, but according to him, he told all his friends I was the prettiest girl in school. In December of 2010, I was sitting on the steps outside of my high school on the last day of the semester before our winter break. I had missed my bus, and I was panicking that my parents would be angry with me because we had a flight to catch that night. Austin was the oldest guy in our class. He had just turned 16 while the rest of us were 15. So naturally, he was the cool guy who had a car and a drivers license. He approached me while I was calling my dad (and bracing myself for an earful).
He asked me why I was sitting all alone an hour after the last bell, and I told him my sob story. He listened, laughed, and offered me a ride home. We began dating 3 weeks later on December 26, 2010. We grew up together. He taught me a lot- patience, selflessness, and how to love someone at their best and at their worst.
Bust most importantly, I learned that love isn’t about the romantic platitudes you grow up dreaming about, or the expectation of constant sun-beamy cheerfulness. I think Ben Rector said it best: “Life is not the mountain tops, it’s the walking in between, and I like you walking next to me”.
How He Asked
When we got engaged, we had been dating about 7 years. He proposed in Banff, Alberta on March 20, 2017 at sunrise. One of my favorite photographers (Zack Melhus) flew out to capture the moment.
