Audrey and Adam - a Napa Proposal

How We Met: Adam and I met through mutual friends at a hole in the wall bar in Tarpon Springs (it’s owned by his friend’s sister), three months after I had moved back into the area. I knew who Adam was (only by name), as we had gone to the same high school, though he was a grade above me. He had a sister who was in my grade, Sarah, but I never spoke to her either since we never had any classes together (…she is now my Matron of Honor). After talking that night at the bar, we went out for drinks together a couple of times and slowly but surely started dating. Adam is not one to make quick decisions or sudden moves. It took him six months for him to call me his girlfriend, six months to meet his parents, nine months to meet mine, and two years to say I Love You. It drove me nuts at the time but I always knew that he was the smartest person I ever dated and that everything from him came from a true place.

After watching two of his sisters get married and being a bridesmaid for both, I was dying to get married. We had been dating longer than both of them! So finally after four and a half years of dating we started planning our second big vacation together: San Francisco and Napa Valley! Adam had been referring to this trip as being “romantic” so I was secretly hoping the whole time that this was IT!

How He Asked: On the second day of our trip, Adam and I drove from San Francisco to Napa Valley. We visited three different wineries during the day, and at night we had booked the Twilight Tour at Robert Mondavi. We had a great tour guide, and the winery itself was beautiful and full of history. The last portion of the tour was a tasting. We sat around in big leather chairs drinking different wines, eating cheese and talking with the others in our tour group. Finally it was just us and another couple left in the tasting room. Adam and I were ready to purchase some bottles when he told me he left his wallet in the car and had to go and get it. I thought nothing of it and kept chatting with a couple who were in Napa Valley trying to fill their wine cellar for the new house they just bought. Adam came back, we bought our wine and tried to leave but the couple kept talking to us! Finally, we were on our way out when Adam asked if I wanted to go back and take a picture at this really pretty spot that was on the tour. My stomach sank and in my head I thought “Oh my god! This is it!” but at the same time I was thinking “This is Adam! He probably really just wants a picture”

It was the longest one minute walk of my life! Adam led me back, got on one knee and pulled out a Tiffany Blue Box! He was so nervous and heartfelt – he didn’t read a poem or have a paragraph prepared about how much I meant to him. He said three sentences (one of which was “Will you marry me”?), but they were the best three sentences I ever heard! We celebrated with dinner at Brix that night, and had two more fabulous days in San Francisco to celebrate together, all by ourselves.

Adam later told me that he was so nervous and almost proposed to me at every winery we went to because they were all so beautiful. I wouldn’t change a thing about our relationship or our engagement!!
