Aubry and Anthony's Commissioning Ceremony Proposal

How we met: Anthony and I first met in 2007 as sophomores at a brand new school. It was the first year the school was opened, so everyone was brand new and getting to know each other. We had two classes together back to back. After the last class of our first day of school, I walked up to him and said “I’m Aubry – you’re cute!” (bold, I know!). We became the closet of friends that entire sophomore and junior year. At the end of junior year, he asked me to be his girlfriend. I was really nervous because Anthony was one of my best friends. If the relationship didn’t work out, would we be able to salvage a friendship? I decided to stop thinking negatively and give the relationship a go – one of the best decisions I have made to date!

We ended up both choosing to go to San Diego State University together. We graduated SDSU in 2013. During our college years, we did a lot of growing up. The odds were against a high school couple lasting through college, but we did it. We started thinking about our futures and both felt we couldn’t picture a day without the other in our lives.

How he asked: About halfway through college, Anthony decided to pursue a career with the United States Marine Corps. He spent two consecutive summers in Quantico, VA completing Officer Candidates School (OCS). After OCS graduation in July 2013, he was eligible to be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and begin his career as an officer with the Marine Corps. His commissioning date was scheduled for January 4, 2014 aboard the U.S.S. Midway flight deck in San Diego.

The day of commissioning was beautiful – San Diego did not disappoint with its sunny and mild temperature for the outdoor event. Our family and friends had arrived to the commissioning ceremony and took pre-ceremony photographs with Anthony. A crowd of tourists gathered to watch the ceremony and stood behind our family and friends to watch.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, Anthony began thanking everyone for attending the ceremony. He thanked friends and family for attending and supporting his decision to have a career with the Marines. After this, he called me up front of the crowd. Before I knew it, Anthony was telling me that I was his soulmate and wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. He got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife in front of family, friends, and tourists. I couldn’t believe it! We were engaged just like that!

Afterwards, we went to a family friend’s house to celebrate. Anthony had been planning a dual commissioning and engagement party for the past couple of months. It was more than I could have ever asked for and I feel truly blessed to be engaged to my best friend and the love of my life.
