Ashlyn and Steven

Engagement Proposal Ideas in Beekman Arms - Delamater Inn in Rhinebeck, NY

How We Met

We first met Columbus Day 2011, through an online dating website, OkCupid. I had just moved to Staten Island, N.Y. for a new teaching job in the city, and while I was “guy-shopping for love” during my commute, I came across Steven’s profile…

Steven decided to check his messages one day. Although to Steven it appeared too good to be true, that I was messaging him. Like he was being catfished or something. Before moving further into the conversation, he requests my Facebook profile, to see if we had any mutual connections…

Things weren’t adding up on my Facebook profile for him: zero mutual friends, hidden profile photos, and my location said Catskill, N.Y. (not Staten Island!)…oops!

A few weeks go by, and I finally hear from Steven. While he was randomly shopping in Costco, he texts me to see if I would want to meet up that evening for a date. I agree, and Steven suggests we do pizzza…

While waiting for me to show up on the date, he gets a call from me saying, “I’m lost..not sure where I’m going!” Steven looks up, and there I am in my Mazda, going up a one way street, in the opposite direction. After a few minutes of guidance, I finally park, and walk towards the pizza restaurant. Steven has a sigh of relief that it’s actually me from the OKCupid profile…

Steven orders pizza, zucchini fries, and mozzarella sticks, and I was loving it! The conversations were great and the date was going very well. It was dessert time, and Steven suggests why not go to a bakery up the street. I now gets into his car and the song, “We Found Love” by Rihanna comes on the radio. We enjoy cannoli and chocolate covered strawberries as the evening comes to a close. When headed back into his car, “We Found Love” by Rihanna comes on again…

As the song states, “We found love in a hopeless place …” We found love online, and in 2011 it seemed like a hopeless place. Online dating wasn’t all that popular. Although, we like to think that love found us. From the start, our love was always on that one way street to each other’s hearts, destined soulmates, bound to find each other…

Fast forward five years, many travel adventures, new career moves, a new home together in Westchester, NY, and a beloved black cat Sampson…We can’t wait to spend the rest of their lives together.

How He Asked

Steven surprised me on February 10, 2017 while I was doing a field ride for work, in Upstate New York, to meet a colleague that worked in my sales region. Steven secretly connected with my new boss, and orchestrated an elaborate surprise to throw me off guard. And, sure he did! The location was at The Beekman Arms, in Rhinebeck, NY. The Beekman Arms is one of the oldest running inns in America. The place was so beautiful, very “Little House on The Prairie.” I remember thinking as I walked in, “This place is so nice!” Steven hired a violinist to play our first date song, “We Found Love,” as I walked in. The room was decorated with candles in the bookshelves, and white rose petals on the floor. It was very emotional. Steven is there standing alone in the middle of the room, and recounts the story of how we first met, as I was in my car meeting him for our first date. Then, just before he gets down on one knee, he says he has one more surprise for me. Out comes our beloved cat Sampson dressed in a tuxedo with a red bow-tie, my parents and his parents, my best friend Bridget (which he got to come down all the way from South Carolina during a snow storm), and also my other best friend Lindsay, while she held an iPad for her twin sister Lauren to watch the moment. It was completely magical, and I won’t ever forget this moment.
