Ashlyn and Nathanial
How We Met
We met in high school. I was going to be a sophomore and he was going to be a senior. We are 24 and 22 now, but we still love to think about our teenage selves. It all started because we were in band, jazz band and variety show together. However, we started talking because of a shared love of Harry Potter. Well, I posted a status on Facebook about how I was excited for Harry Potter and he commented on it. We then proceeded to have a conversation with over 200 posts on a Facebook status. I was very sly and liked him and asked for his “AIM screen name” which was the hip messaging device at the time. After that one Harry Potter status, we could not stop talking. Every day I would wake up and message him first to talk about Harry Potter.
Soon the conversation led to our favorite classic rock bands, our shared love of Disney, comic books, Star Wars and food. He was exactly like me in every way and finally school started. During band we would look at each other the whole time and smile. I would call him after school for homework help, even though we were in different grades and I knew exactly what I was doing in every class. I just wanted an excuse to call him and talk to him more. Finally, he decided we needed to go on a date and I was extremely happy.
We prepared a date for Friday, October 2, 2009. It was a typical high school date with bowling, food and cuddling, but what made it special was how happy we were to finally spend a significant amount of time alone together. The way he asked me out was perfect. He gave me a stuffed owl with a note of him pretending to be Ron and asking Hermione (me) to be his girlfriend (and also for her to help him with his Potions homework.) It was a wonderful way for two band nerds to fall in love and I wouldn’t change a second of it.
How He Asked
Our flight was delayed and we finally landed and got to our resort around 9:30. We are Disney Vacation Club Members and we were staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. Disney is my absolute favorite place in the world and I love Ariel more than any other Disney princess. In our hotel room, I found a note on the back of the door, and it was a letter instructing me to find Ariel’s Castle in the Magic Kingdom and I had to solve all the clues before midnight or Ursula would get my prince! The first clue was from Ariel and I had to say the names of Ariel’s sisters with my eyes closed near King Triton statue across from Ariel’s Castle in Magic Kingdom.
After I said the names, another clue popped out of nowhere and landed on the ground in front of me. The next clue instructed me to go to the wettest point in the park and stand by the drop and this note was from Flounder. Splash Mountain of course was where I needed to go next for my scavenger hunt! Once there, I had to hum Under The Sea with my eyes closed. Another clue popped out of “nowhere.” The last clue was from Sebastian and he instructed me to find a place where wishes come true and wish for my prince. Cinderella’s Wishing Well.
I had to close my eyes and wish for my “savior” before Ursula stole him away. Each note was written in a different font and with a different language to represent the character. Once at the wishing well, I closed my eyes and waited for a little while. Nathan told me to open my eyes and was holding the ring and said, “I have been wishing for you since the day I met you.”
So basically, he led me on a scavenger hunt through Magic Kingdom and proposed in front of Cinderella’s Wishing Well with the castle glowing in the background.
It was so beautiful and I could not stop crying.
