Ashlyn and Matt
How We Met
Matt and I met in 2009 at a high school football game in Lynchburg, VA. I had just finished soccer practice and remember not wanting to go to the game — because what were the chances I would meet the love of my life and future husband?! My friends talked me into going, and when we found a seat Matt just happened to be standing behind me. Somehow we began engaging in some small talk, but soon we parted ways. I remember thinking Matt, and his southern draw that has faded with time, were incredibly cute. Matt and I never exchanged numbers that night, but he friend requested me on Facebook a few days later. I messaged him and gave him my number, and it took him about a week to text me (if you know Matt, this isn’t surprising). We started dating November 3, 2009 after going to Buffalo Wild Wings and seeing the movie Strangers. Fast forward seven years later and I think I speak for both of us when I say life could not be more picture perfect.
We both went to college at Virginia Tech, and both found great jobs that kept us close to our family. We adopted our dog, Riley, in October 2015 from a shelter in Tennessee. Matt and I love dogs, but we especially love Riley. I can’t imagine getting home from a long day at work and not seeing her tail wag so hard the bottom half of her body shakes. I even got our wedding planner to include a clause in the contract to allow Riley at our wedding ceremony. She will be our ring bearer. In our free time we love being outside in the NRV. Whether its trips to the dog park, going to local breweries, or just sitting on our back porch catching up, I’d say we have already started an amazing life together. I am so thankful that I have been able to enjoy so much of my life with Matt, and to be honest life before Matt is something hard to remember. He is the most kind-hearted and selfless person I know, and pushes me to be the best version of myself. Meeting and falling in love with Matt was the best thing that has ever happened to me, and I can’t wait to continue the journey of life with him as his wife.
How He Asked
One of our favorite places to visit is New York City. For those of you who have visited the Big Apple, you know the feeling you get when you step onto the streets and you see life bustling all around you. Something about the atmosphere is captivating to us. So, when we talked about planning a New York trip for September 2016 neither of us objected. We purchased our train tickets, booked a hotel, and, not so patiently, waited for the day to arrive that we would be in the city. The day of our trip we were like little kids on Christmas morning. I don’t think either of us has willingly gotten up at 4:45am so easy! We sat on the train for the eight hour trip taking naps, talking and planning what the long weekend would have in store for us.
When we got to the city we dropped our luggage in our room and began our adventure by eating three slices of pizza. Our next stop was Top of the Rock. We were both very excited as we went through security (yep, Matt had to get the ring through the security scanner without me seeing and transfer it back into his pocket!) When we got to the top we both took in the gorgeous views surrounding us. It was like nothing we had ever seen before. Then Matt told me he paid extra to have our picture taken at the top. We found the photographer and as we posed to smile I placed my hand below his chest. I felt his heart beating unusually fast – I knew he was either about to propose or I needed to call 9-1-1! That’s when he turned to me and got down on one knee.
He asked me to marry him and of course I said yes! Everyone around us cheered, Matt and I laughed, cried and hugged – we were SO excited! We spent the rest of the weekend celebrating the beginning of our new journey together. Matt hired a professional photographer to take pictures of us in Central Park and the surrounding areas the day after the proposal – pictures and memories I will forever cherish. New York will forever hold a special place in our hearts and signifies so much in our relationship.
