Ashlyee and Carlos
How We Met: Carlos (or Ivan as his family & I call him) & I met about 5 1/2 years ago online, I was 17 and he was 18. We first began texting and messaging each other for about 1 month and then abruptly stopped, we both began dating other people.
However, there was obviously something in the universe that brought us back together. We started talking again in January 2010 and by the beginning of February we couldn’t go a day without texting each other.
We met for the very first time on January 31, 2010, I can’t say how he was feeling but I have never felt so many butterflies in my stomach like I had that day. We spent a couple hours together until he had to go home, and that night we shared our first kiss.
I knew then that he would always be the one! Fast forward to February 12, 2010 – we were standing at the end of my driveway after a basketball game, his hands were shaking, he was stuttering and out of those nervous lips came, “Will you be my girlfriend?”
I jumped for joy into his arms and kissed him but not until after I said, “Of course!!” Since that day he has made me the happiest girl. No doubt we’ve had bad days but at the end of every bad day was an “I love you” and that is what has kept us going strong – never going to bed angry.
How He Asked: It was September 5, 2015 and little did I know that day would be one of the best days of my life. Our best friends had just got married on August 30th, so of course marriage and wedding was on our minds and it most definitely didn’t help that every way we turned someone was asking, “So when’s your wedding?” I finally got to the point that I told him we can’t talk about our “wedding” until you ask me ;) Now that I know everything leading up to the day he proposed, it all makes sense of how everyone was acting around me.
My family told me that we were throwing a party for my brother-in-law who had just got a new job. My parents rented chairs, tables, and tents – which made no sense because my family never did that before, but I just rolled with it. Ivan told me the Wednesday before that we were going to the movies to watch Straight out of Compton. I didn’t understand why we had to go that day to watch the movie especially since I had to help out at my house and finish getting things ready – but he was determined to watch that movie sharply at 3pm.
I had broke a nail the day before, so he told me Saturday to make sure to get my nail done, which didn’t throw me off because who wants to walk around with a broken nail? He then followed with “Wear one of your summer dresses, I like that!” I didn’t understand why, but since this day was already weird enough I didn’t ask many questions. I proceeded to get ready, he picked me up and we went to the movies. The movie was longer than he expected, so we rushed out of the theater back to his car where he then pulled out a blindfold from his backseat and told me to put it on. I, as any girl would be, was shocked and surprised and asked why.
He said “So it won’t ruin the surprise” I figured, well why not? We drove for about 20 minutes and he parked – after going. In circles three times looking for parking, since no one left an open parking spot for him hahah He then led me to the final destination hand in hand, and finally had me stop in one spot and took my blindfold off.
When I opened my eyes there stood my parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, Nino, Nina’s, best friends, and my future in- laws – everyone that I had hoped, wished, and secretly asked him years in advance to be there – hold a huge sign that said “Ashlyee will you marry me?” :) I turned around and there was Ivan, down on one knee, I stood there for a couple seconds to make sure I wasn’t dreaming and he said the four little words every girl wishes for “Will you marry me?”
I screamed and said yes about five times, and jumped in his arms. To this day I still can’t believe I have been so blessed with such an amazing fiancé that made that day everything I wanted and so much more. October 2016 can’t come fast enough! Ivan if you are reading this I love you so much & thank you for making that day and the last 5 1/2 years of my life the best I could ever hope for. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you.?
