Ashley and Jason's Journal Proposal
How We Met: Jason and I didn’t exactly have a love-at-first sight meeting, but he (of course) says otherwise. We were in the same graduating class in a high school located in northwest Ohio and we became friends around our junior year. After we graduated, we became even better friends, hanging out all the time with our mutual friends, but sometimes spending time together, just us the two of us. I didn’t really notice at first, but I loved spending time with him, even if it was just as friends.
During our town’s county fair a few years ago, I asked Jason to buy me some sugar waffles. He didn’t get me any but when he asked me out on a date a few months later, I gave him a task. I told him, “You get me some sugar waffles, I don’t care how, and I will go out on date with you.” He was ecstatic and accepted the challenge. He got some sugar waffles from a family member and was over the moon when I agreed to go on a date with him.
After our first date, which consisted of us watching several movies until early morning, Jason had to go back to school. We kept in touch and went out on dates almost every weekend when he visited home. I never regret going on that first date (I don’t think he does either!) and I only fall more in love with Jason.
How he asked: Jason totally surprised me when he banned me from his house the week he was working on our four year anniversary gift. He was planning something BIG and I had no idea what he was planning! The morning of our big anniversary date, I went to his house so he could take me to his big surprise.
He told me dress up and I had no idea what to expect. He ended up taking me to the Bluffton Park (also known as the Bluffton University Nature Preserve) and surprised me with a visit from his college roommate, Cody, and Cody’s fiancé, Stephanie, who are also photographers. As far as I knew at this point, my surprise was a simple couple photography session and was blown away by him keeping that a surprise from me.
Near the end of our session, Jason tells me that there is one more surprise and takes me to a nearby tree stump. On the stump was a storybook wrapped in leather. I opened it up and began to read. Jason had written and illustrated a beautiful story that was all about us and our love story. I was tearing up as I read his story and as I got to the last page, a ring sat between some pages in a hole he had cut out to hide the ring in. He untied the ring from it’s hiding spot, got down on one knee, and proposed. I couldn’t say “yes” fast enough!
