Ashley and James
How We Met
I met her through a friend in the spring semester of my freshman year. I remember the day like it was yesterday. I walked up to the table at my college cafeteria and saw this gorgeous blonde haired girl. I had no idea who she was but I had to introduce myself. As I was an outgoing person, I decided when I went to college I would try to meet and befriend as many people as possible. I was usually really quick with sarcastic responses and trying to make people laugh was one of my many hobbies.
But when I saw Ashley, I didn’t know what to say. I walked right up to her table and I was shell-shocked. No words came to mind. I probably stood there with a stare with my mouth wide open. I was looking at the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. I somehow managed to stick my hand out and introduce myself. She smiled and shook my hand and told me it was her birthday. I said Happy Birthday and I guess I would say I was her greatest birthday present ever.
How He Asked
I had the whole thing planned out for about month. We had talked about getting married multiple times through our entire relationship. It happened exactly 4 years, 1 month and 1 day after we had started going out. Mini-golf was our sport of choice and no matter how hard I tried, Ashley bet me almost every single time (we are both consumed with winning). The number 11 was also our number, as our anniversary is on April 11th. So on one beautiful May day, I arranged my friend to show up with his high tech camera and a few friends to play mini-golf. Ashley had never met him before and had no idea who he was. The plan was for him to arrive just before us and place the empty ring box in hole 11 and for me to completely surprise her. Of course, my friend showed up a little late.
I had to stall, without it being too obvious, by putting up 10 shots on hole 2 to just give my friend enough time to cut in front of us. My girlfriend was so embarrassed and knew something was up. We let my friend and his group play through us while I continued to miss shot after shot. Eventually they were well enough in front of us that I continued to play the best I possibly could. It still was not nearly as well as her best mini golf skills. When we came upon hole 11, I saw my friends on the next hole which happened to be elevated and looking down on us. My girl went first, and hit the ball and it came very close to going in. She ran ahead to finish off the easy putt and rub it in my face. When she tapped the ball in and reached down for the ball in the hole, she instead picked up the ring box; she then turned bright red.
I snuck up behind her with the ring in my hand and on one knee. She turned around with the box open and a smile from ear to ear; just like when she smiled at me over four years ago in the cafeteria at school when I first laid eyes on her. Little did she know my friend was behind me taking the perfect snapshot of her first reaction. The picture is the background on my phone and will be for the rest of my life.
I knew right then I would be happy with her for the rest of my life and I was ecstatic to spend eternity with her.
