Ashley and Ethan

How We Met

I met Ethan when we were attending Towns County High School town in the charming, but intensely small mountain town of Hiawassee . Though our story did not begin as High School Sweethearts, I had no idea that my life would meet again with his and be forever entwined. I was a “move-in” from Destin, Florida, and He was a born and raised Georgia boy. He was an athlete continuing into his college years, and I am most certainly not (walking to the bathroom in the middle of the night is a major accomplishment for me). Our paths did not really cross in high school, as small as it was, but we became more familiar when we both attended Young Harris College after graduating. He was a year older than I, and left for the University of Georgia after two years, while I made the transition to Valdosta State University. I never really knew more of him than that he was a nice guy, and always a friend of a friend to me. One magical summer, changed all of that though… I was returning to my beloved mountain town I finally called home for summer break and began hosting at a restaurant at the local resort.

I spent my days lazily by the lake, and evenings in the restaurant, walking cheerful vacationers to leather booths overlooking the gorgeous Appalachian landscape. One day, I came strolling from around the corner to see a handsome young man at the bar, tanned, in khaki shorts, and ordering a Sweet water 420. Ethan was working at the docks, just below the resort and apparently liked to stop in for a beer at the end of his day. I came up to talk to him, I remember being nervous for some odd reason. We laughed, exchanged numbers, and that was that. By the end of summer, we began dating. Our wonderful summer, that we spent getting to know one another, sliding down waterfalls, swimming in lakes, and being in the warm night air was one that I will never forget. He quickly found his way into my heart. As the seasons changed and we returned to school, I fell devastatingly in love with him. The distance was hard, keeping up with college classes, work, social functions..but we somehow made time for each other.

I knew he was the one when he accompanied me to take my grandmother, who raised me, to a Doctor’s appointment in Atlanta. She is feeble and needs assistance everywhere, and has a difficult time walking. I was nervous and flustered enough trying to get her through Atlanta traffic, to the hospital, and finally to her appointment. Ethan was calm, collected, and clearly wasn’t phased at all. He came to my rescue and started pushing her wheelchair for me. I watched him as I followed them, he wheeled my grandmother around and somehow made her laugh on a day we received some tough news for her. I can still remember the smile my Grandmother had after he made a few comical remarks. He never missed a beat. I though to myself “Anyone who treats my Granny this way, is someone to keep.” Fast forward a couple of years and we now live in an apartment in Woodstock, Georgia and have a chocolate lab named Ben. I had been itching to get engaged to this man and I knew it was going to be any day based on my VERY unsubtle hints.

It had been a particularly nice Wednesday. I had come home early from work, the sun was out and it was remarkably warm for a January day. Atlanta traffic was even cooperating with me, and I came home to Ethan who asked me if I wanted to go grab a drink. He took me to chambering Downtown, Woodstock where we now call home. We sat forever and drank margaritas and had chips and queso like any other night. I was starting to get disappointed, knowing he wouldn’t do it this way, when he asked me to take a walk with him. He walked me across town, to the historic 115 year old gazebo in the square. He pulled me close and started whispering in my ear how we always knew I was the one. At this point, I was crying and could barely hear all the incredible things he was saying to me. He got down on one knee, used my full name, and changed my life forever. He then took me to a romantic dinner at another restaurant downtown and we ate in the candlelight and told all of our friends and family the good news. We will be married on September 30th, 2017 in that same small mountain town were we first fell in love. a
