Ashley and Tyler

How We Met

I was in 7th grade, and Tyler was in 6th grade. We went to different schools, but my bestfriend was friends with his best friend. I guess you could say my best friend and Tyler were “talking” (but you know how that goes in middle school). One weekend, I was staying with my best friend, and she had been on the phone talking to Tyler for a while. She decided she needed to take a “quick” shower, and told me to just talk to him on the phone for 5 minutes while she showered. Well, 5 minutes was all I needed to steal his number out of her phone. We talked and laughed together on the phone. I thought he was so nice, and I remember being so jealous of my best friend because she was the one “talking” to him. After she got out of the shower, I gave the phone back to her so she could continue talking to him. I could tell his tone of voice had changed when I gave the phone back to her. As any normal teenage would do, I texted him. He must have looked at his phone and saw that I had texted them while they were still on the phone because the next thing I heard him say was “Hey, I’ve gotta go. I’ll talk to you later.” Click. Phone call ended. Not even 10 seconds later, I got a text message back from him. After that, we talked all the time. He became my bestfriend. After four years of being bestfriends, we had our first “date”. My parents had gotten tickets to go see The Scrooge Christmas play. There was an extra ticket, and I decided to take him. My dad went and picked him Tyler up from his house on his way home from work. I was so nervous. All throughout the night, he opened the car door for me, held my hand during the entire play, kept his hand on my leg the whole time we ate dinner (Mexican to be exact), etc. I thought it was too good to be true. At that point, I had had my license for about 6 months. We went back to my house after dinner to get my car, and I drove him home. He kissed me in the driveway. I kept thinking that this was just too good to be true. He asked me to be his girlfriend after that first kiss, and I shot him down. I like to say that I shot him down because he didn’t have his license yet and I didn’t want to have to drive my boyfriend everywhere. It’s the man’s job to drive their lady everywhere, right?! In reality, I was just nervous. I had never had a boyfriend before. I broke his heart, he got out of the car, and I said “wait!”. He sat back down in the passenger seat, I leaned over and kissed him again. I went home and the first thing my mom said to me was “that boy is a keeper, Ashley”. After that night, he didn’t talk to me for a couple of weeks (understandable). I finally texted him one day and apologized. I still wanted to be friends. I felt loss without my bestfriend. Every single day my mom was nagging me about him. Asking me how he was, when he was coming over again, etc. I finally told her that he asked me to be his girlfriend and I said no. She told me I was crazy and that she hopes I never have to regret that decision. Tyler and I ended up going separate ways with our love life. I dated someone else and so did he. We stayed best friends. Neither of our relationships were the best, so when something would happen, we’d always be talking to each other for advice and support (because that’s what best friends do). One day, I saw his girlfriend out in public with another man (holding hands and kissing him). I immediately called Tyler and he broke up with her. He was broken. Not too long after, my relationship ended. I was broken. I had no interest in talking to ANY guy, but I wanted to talk to Tyler. That spoke volumes to me. Now that I was 18 years old, I came to my senses and realized maybe there really is something between us. We helped each other through our heart breaks. We built each other back up. We hung out constantly for 6 months before he asked me to be his girlfriend (again). That time, I said yes!

How He Asked

Ever since saying yes to being his girlfriend, I have had the absolute best time of my life. One month into our relationship, he gave me a “promise ring”. We instantly knew what we had was real. I knew that I wanted to marry this man one day. I knew I wanted to build a life and a home with him. I felt the proposal coming. I had a feeling for about 3 weeks. I kept thinking it was going to happen but it didn’t. From what I have been told, he texted his sister-in law at the end of November and said he was thinking about doing it at Dickens of a Christmas (a Christmas event we have every year downtown in our hometown). She replied and said “You realize Dickens of a Christmas starts this Friday, right?”. Sure enough, he hadn’t realized that. The nerves set in. He asked my dad for his permission on Wednesday night (November 29) while I was in the shower. I had no idea. That Thursday, he told me he needed to go pick up one of my Christmas presents from the mall. I also needed to go to the mall but he wouldn’t let me ride with him. I knew then that something was weird. He left and went “to pick up my Christmas present”. He had been gone a while and I was wrapping presents. I needed to wrap a couple things for him so I looked at his location to make sure he wasn’t close to being home, and it showed him at his brothers house. Hmmmm. When he got home, I asked him why he went to his brothers. “I needed something for work tomorrow” is the response I got. Okay, that seems logical, but I am not dumb. This was all fishy. I just knew something was going on. That Friday, I was at work, and I got a text message from my dad that said “How is your day going?”. Literally 2 minutes later, I got a text message from my mom that said “How is your day going?” I asked my mom why she just sent me the same exact thing my dad did and she just brushed it off by saying “great minds think alike I guess”. Mhmmmm. Sure. Once again, fishy. They both asked me what I was doing that night and I told them that we were going downtown for Dickens of a Christmas. Mom said “oh that’ll be fun. Should be a nice and pretty night for it”. I was thinking to myself “yeah, okay.” We went downtown and were walking around. We were hungry but all of the restaurants were too busy. We left downtown and went out to the mall to eat. After dinner, it was about 9 o’clock and I was ready to go home and go to bed. I said we could just go Saturday night to look at the Christmas trees. Tyler’s sister-in-law said “I’m going tonight, and you are coming with me”. I was so tired, but I realized it was only 9 o’clock and I figured I shouldn’t be a grandma and go to bed at 9 o’clock on a Friday night. We went back downtown and were walking through The Hotel Roanoke looking at all the Christmas trees that were put up (companies put up and decorate Christmas trees). I always love going to look at the Christmas trees. I have an obsession with snowmen. We walked outside to the patio and saw a snowman Christmas tree. It was so pretty and I kept talking about how much I loved it and wanted to put a tree like that up in my house when we move out. We kept walking and finished looking at all of the trees. As I was getting ready to head towards the door to leave, Tyler said “Honey, do you want to go back and take a picture with the snowman tree?” My response was “sure”. I knew what was coming. I got anxious. I felt myself shaking from excitement. We walk back upstairs to go out to the patio. As we were walking out the door to the patio, another guy was putting a ring on his girlfriend’s finger. He had just proposed. I turned around to say “aww, how sweet”, and as I was looking back, I saw Tyler staring at his sister-in-law. We went out and took a picture in front of the tree and walked back inside. I was confused. I kept asking myself “why did he not get down on one knee?” As we were leaving, we stopped by the big tree in the lobby to take a picture at that tree as well. We took 2 or 3 pictures (for good measure) and as I went to walk away from the tree, he got down on one knee. FINALLY!!! I said YES!!! He put the most beautiful ring that I have ever seen on my finger (he has great taste and knows me so well). We have been engaged almost 3 weeks. We’ve been together for almost 3 years. And we have been best friends going on 10 years. I am a true believer that it’s better to be best friends before lovers. I wouldn’t trade my best friend and lover for anything in this world.
